CSUN Set to Host Bill Cullum Invitational Monday & Tuesday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Cal State Northridge men's golf is set to host its annual Bill Cullum Invitational this coming Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 21-22 at Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley.

The 18-year old tournament recently changed its name to the "The Cullum Invitational" after the legendary Northridge men's golf coach. In previous years, the tournament has been called "The Countrywide Invitational" and in 2006 was renamed "The Bill Cullum/Countrywide Invitational". This years field features 20 teams who will battle the Wood Ranch course which is par 72 and 6,819 yards. The tournament kicks off with a College-Am (practice round) on Sunday, Oct. 21 and will be followed by 36 holes on Monday, Oct. 21 and 18 holes on Tuesday, Oct. 22.

WHERE:   Wood Ranch Golf Club, Simi Valley, Calif., Par 72 - 6,819 yards

WHEN:   Sunday, Oct. 20, College-Am/Practice Round (1:00 p.m. shotgun start) Monday, Oct. 21, 36 holes (shotgun start at 7:45 a.m.)  Tuesday, Oct. 22, 18 holes (Tee times start at 7 a.m. off #1 and #10)

FORMAT:   54 holes (108 players) Each school will field a team of five players with Cal Poly, Pepperdine and San Diego also fielding individuals whose score will not count towards team scoring.

FIELD:   Arizona State, CSU Bakersfield, Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, Gonzaga, Hawai'i,  Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, Sacramento State, San Diego, Seattle, South Dakota State, Southern Utah, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, Utah State, Utah Valley, Weber State, Cal State Northridge.

RESULTS:   Golfstat Live Scoring of the 2013 Cullum Invitational will be available here. Results will also be posted on the official website of Cal State Northridge athletics, www.GoMatadors.com at the conclusion of the first day and at the conclusion of the tournament.


THE CULLUM LEGACY

Bill Cullum coached the Matador men's team from 1965 to 1986 and won three NCAA Division II golf championships and finished second twice. He was named NCAA College-Division Coach of the Year in 1969 and District Eight Coach of the Year in 1970 and 1971.

Under Cullum, the Matadors won eight California Collegiate Athletic Association championships from 1969 to 1977. Cullum was inducted to the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame in 1989 and the Cal State Northridge Athletics Hall of Fame in 2012. He passed away on July 12, 2003. Current Cal State Northridge men's golf coach Jim Bracken played under Cullum from 1978-80.

"He just had a passion for the game and helped a lot of kids develop personally as well as professionally," said Bracken. "He had tremendous care for his players and his teams."
