NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Kyler Sauer, who will be a senior on the Cal State Northridge men's golf team in the fall, was one of three players who advanced to the U.S. Amateur Championships out of the Sectional Qualifier at Crystalaire Country Club in Llano, Calif.
Sauer, along with Trevor Simsby and Glen Scher (UC Santa Barbara), advanced to the prestigious amateur tournament which will be held Aug. 12-18 at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass.
Simsby (64-69) won the sectional qualifier with a two-round score of 11-under par, 133. Scher (70-69) was second at five-under 139 followed by Sauer (70-71) who earned the final automatic qualifying spot finishing with a score of three-under 141.
Over the two rounds of the qualifier, Sauer posted 10 birdies (five in each round) and 20 pars. He was one-under on Tuesday which followed a two-under round on Monday. A total of 73 players competed for a spot among the top three.
As a junior in 2012-13, Sauer led the Matador team with a 75.47 stroke average. He posted his best finish of the season at the 2013 Big West Championship where he finished tied for eighth with a three-round score of five-over 221.
