Matadors Start Fast But Wind Up Fifth at Firestone Grill Invitational

NIPOMO, Calif. - In first place after an opening round 284, Cal State Northridge followed up with rounds of 308 and 292 to finish in fifth-place at the Firestone Grill Invitational at Monarch Dunes G.C. Kyler Sauer and Steven Molumby, competing as an individual, each tied for 20th to pace the Matadors.

The tournament opened with a first round on Monday before the second round was suspended by darkness before being completed Tuesday morning. A third and final round was contested Tuesday afternoon.

CSUN followed up a 14th-place finish in its season-opening St. Mary's Invitational by placing sixth following Tuesday's final round. The Matadors had a one-shot lead over Seattle after a first round 284 which was a season low. But a second round 308 all but took CSUN out of the running for the team title. The Matadors were able to rebound with a final round 292 to finish at 884. Host Cal Poly blistered the course winning by four shots with a three round total of 847.

"It was frustarting because we gave away at least 11 shots at the end of round two," said head coach Jim Bracken. "With the way we played in the first round, we know we're capable of playing good golf but we've got to be consistent. This was an improvement over St. Mary's but we're just looking to play well the rest of the fall and get ready for spring."

Sauer, a junior from College of the Canyons, was in good shape following an opening round three under-par 67. But ensuing rounds of 77-75 dropped Sauer into a tie for 20th-place at nine over 219 at the conclusion. Molumby, competing as an indy in his first tournament this season, carded rounds of 76, even par 70 and 73 to also finish tied for 20th.

Oscar Sachs finished one shot back of his teammates as he posted rounds of 72-76-72 to finish 27th at (+10) 220. Shane Blanchard was another shot back as he finished 29th at (+11) 221 after carding rounds of 72-76-73.

Ryan Green tied for 35th at (+15) 225 following rounds of 73-79-73 and senior Matt Siporin was 39th at (+17) 227 after posting scores of 73-80-74.

Cal State Northridge returns to action Oct. 22-23 when the Matadors host their annual Cullum Invitational at Wood Ranch G.C. in Simi Valley. 20 teams, including several that reached the NCAA Tournament last season, will be vie for the team crown on the challenging Wood Ranch layout.
