Final Round 299 Drops Matadors Into a Tie For Sixth at Firestone Grill Invitational

After opening with a team score of 293, Cal State Northridge could not match that score over the final two rounds as the Matadors finished tied for sixth-place at the Firestone Grill Invitational Monday at Monarch Dunes G.C.

As a team, CSUN posted rounds of 293-300-299 to finish sixth among the 10-team field at 892. Cal State Fullerton claimed the team title with a score of 861 with Utah Valley (879) second, Seattle (882) and UC Riverside (882) tied for third and host Cal Poly (890) fifth.

"We simply didn't play well this tournament," said head coach Jim Bracken. "If I had to pinpoint it, I'd say putting was the main thing but we just didn't play well at all. Hopefully we'll use this as experience and play much better at Weber State next week."

Despite the team score the Matadors did have two players finish in the top-20 as freshman Steven Molumby tied for 12th and junior Chris Russo tied for 20th.

Molumby, who was 71st at the St. Mary's Invitational two weeks ago, had his best collegiate finish as the freshman from Stavanger, Norway carded rounds of 70-74-76 to finish at (+7) 220. Molumby and Russo had the Matadors' lone sub-par rounds during the tournament.

Looking to follow up his first collegiate title at St. Mary's, Russo opened well with an opening round 69 but quickly fell off the pace with a second round 78. A final round 75 left him tied for 20th at (+9) 222.

Senior Jason Rosenkranz, who opened with a 78 on Sunday, fired closing rounds of 71-74 to move into a tie for 23rd at (+10) 223. Richard Kim had hs best round of the tournament on Monday, finishing with a three over-par 74 which followed back-to-back rounds of 79. Kim wound up tied for 48th at (+19) 232. Sophomore Ryan Green rounded out the CSUN lineup as he tied for 53rd-place at (+21) 234 following rounds of 76-77-81.

Senior Sebastien Domingo, competiing in his first tournament of the season, finished tied for 53 with Green at (+21) 234 playing as an individual. Domingo posted rounds of 81-75-78 playing for the first time since the Bill Cullum Invitational in October of 2010.

The Matadors will be in action again next week as CSUN competes at the Wildcat Invitational in Layton, Utah (Oct. 10-11).
