CSUN Basketball Team Prepares for #17 Gonzaga

Game Gossip ...
One of the biggest games in recent Matador basketball history will take place on Saturday, December 8, at 5:00 p.m. when the Matadors travel to nationally-ranked Gonzaga ... The Bulldogs are ranked 17th in the Associated Press poll, and 19th in the ESPN/USA Today poll ... After the game on Saturday at Gonzaga, the Matadors will rest until a Dec. 20 game at home against Vanugard ... The Cal State Northridge-Gonzaga game will be televised live in the Pacific Northwest only ... In the Seattle-area, the game can be seen on KSTW, Channel 11 ... In eastern Washington, northern Idaho, western Montana and eastern Oregon, the game will be televised on KHQ-TV.

Series Story ...
This will only be the third meeting between Cal State Northridge and Gonzaga ... The series is tied at 1-1 with the Matadors winning a 77-73 decision on Dec. 18, 1965 at The Matadome, but falling on Nov. 27, 1993 in the consolation game of the Stanford Invitational, 90-57.

Coaches Corner ...
Bobby Braswell is in his 12th season as head coach at Cal State Northridge ... Braswell has coached 332 games in his duties as head coach, and has produced a record of 174-158 (.524) ... Braswell has guided Cal State Northridge to postseason play in each of his previous eleven seasons, reaching the conference tournament championship game on four occasions ... In past seasons under Braswell, the Matadors have prided themselves on tough defense and a productive offense ... Last year, the Matadors led the Big West Conference in rebounding margin (+6.9) and steals (8.97) ... Already this year, the Matadors have forced the opponents in 151 turnovers, produced 70 steals, and have outrebounded the opposition, 296-246 ... Braswell's teams have been ranked in the Top 25 in steals nationally in ten of the last eleven seasons ... Braswell is assisted by second year
assistant coach Louis Wilson, and newcomers Stan Johnson and James Blake ... Ryan Dodd is in his first season as Director of Basketball Operations.

Townsend Talk ...
Tremaine Townsend, the talented 6-foot-9 junior center from Phoenix, Arizona, has been named co-Player of the Week in the Big West Conference along with James Powell of UC Santa Barbara ... Townsend helped the Matadors to a 2-1 record last week ... At Cleveland State (11/28/07), Townsend registered season-high in points (16) and rebounds (15) to lead the Matadors to a 78-68 victory ... Townsend then scored ten points and grabbed ten rebounds against Duquesne (11/30/07) in the first round of the Drake Invitational in Des Moines ... Townsend finished the Drake Tournament with six points, four rebounds and a pair of steals in a 69-43 victory over North Carolina Central (12/1/07), and was named to the all-tournament team .. For the season, Townsend is averaging 11.0 points and a league-leading 9.9 rebounds per game ... Townsend also leads the Big West in field goal percentage (.559) ... In his last game, Townsend recorded his fourth double-double in the last five games, once again coming off the bench to score eleven points and a game-high 14 rebounds in a 76-64 victory over Utah Valley State (12/5/07) ... The last time a CSUN player averaged in double figures in rebounding was during the 1971-72 season when Paul McCracken averaged 12.0 rpg ... Tremaine Townsend is currently averaging 9.9 rpg.

League leaders ...
Cal State Northridge and several players are among the leaders in the Big West Conference ... The Matadors are #1 in rebounding (42.3 rpg). rebound margin (+7.2) and blocked shots (4.57 bpg), and #2 in scoring (83.1 ppg), assists (15.4 apg) and steals (9.1 spg) ... Tremaine Townsend is #1 in the Big West in field goal percentage (.559) and rebounding (9.9 rpg) ... Josh Jenkins continues to lead the conference in assists (5.9 apg) while senior all-conference candidate Calvin Chitwood maintains his league lead in blocked shots (2.1 bpg) .. Senior all-conference candidate Jonathan Heard is eighth in scoring (13.6 ppg), and rebounding (5.9 rpg) ... Calvin Chitwood is second in rebounding (8.1 rpg), eighth in field goal percentage (.478) and scoring (13.6 ppg), steals (1.4 spg) and minutes played (29.6 mpg) ... Four players are averaging in double figures, three players are shooting .478 or better, two players are shooting 43 percent or better from three-point territory, and two players are shooting 80 percent or better from the free throw line.

Cal State Northridge is showing signs of an improved defense in 2007-08 ... The Matadors have held the opposition to only 43 percent shooting (#4 in the Big West) and has forced the opposition into 151 turnovers in seven games ... Cal State Northridge has collected 70 steals (#2 in the Big West) in the six games ... In the last two games, the CSUN defense has held the opposition to only a .362 shooting percentage (33-for-91), .276 (8-for-29) from 3-point territory and forced the opposition into 53 turnovers.

Rebounding Raves ...
In six of the seven games, the Matadors have outrebounded its opponents ... Cal State Northridge is averaging 42.3 rebounds per game (#1 in the Big West) compared to 35.1 for the opposition ... Dynamic duo ...
Jonathan Heard and Calvin Chitwood were expected to be the dominant 1-2 scoring punch for Cal State Northridge this year, and the two senior all-conference candidates are off to excelent starts after six games ... Heard and Chitwood have played a total of 185 games in four seasons, and a combined 127 starts ... Heard is tied for the team lead in scoring (13.6 ppg, #8 in the Big West) along with Chitwood and is eighth in rebounding (5.9 rpg, #8 in the league) while Chitwood is tops in the Big West in blocked shots (2.1 bpg), second in rebounding (8.1 rpg), eighth in scoring (13.6 ppg), steals (1.4 spg) and minutes played (29.6 mpg) ... As a duo, Heard and Chitwood are shooting .524 (65--for-124) from the floor along with 20 steals and 16 blocks ... In the 2007-08 season opener, Heard and Chitwood combined for 51 points and 26 rebounds to help the Matadors to a 96-85 victory over Chicago State (11/10/07) ... Heard scored a career-high 29 points, including 19 in the second half, while Chitwood added 22 points ... Chitwood added to his all-around great numbers with a career-high 18 rebounds (ten offensive rebounds), four blocks and three steals in 38 minutes of play ... In addition to his career-high 29 points, Heard added three steals, one block and an assist in 35 minutes of action.

Depth Dialogue ...
There is no doubt that the team's talented depth have contributed to the fast start in 2007-08 ... Nine players are averaging 15 minutes or more ... Three reserve players, Tremaine Townsend, Deon Tresvant and Josh Jenkins, are averaging 26.0, 20.9 and 19.9 minutes per game, respectively ... Townsend is third on the team in scoring (11.0 ppg), Tresvant is fourth in scoring (10.9 ppg) while Jenkins has a team-leading 41 assists (5.9 apg, #1 in the Big West) and has chipped in at 9.4 ppg ... Townsend, is #1 in the Big West in rebounding (9.9 rpg) and field goal percentage (.559).

Footnote Facts ...
The 6-1 start to the 2007-08 season is the best since the 1988-89 campaign when the Matadors also started 6-1 ... Through seven games, CSUN has notched five wins by double-digit margins ... In 2006-07, the Matadors played 31 games and had five wins by ten or more points ... The 12 assists by John Jenkins against Cal State Bakersfield (11/21/07) was three short of the school record, and eighth-best for a single game in CSUN history.
