The Cal State Northridge men's basketball team, a 96-85 winner over Chicago State in its season opener, hits the road for a non-league game on Saturday (7:00 p.m.) at Pepperdine. This will be the 13th meeting between the two teams with the Waves holding an 8-4 advantage in a series that dates back to 1961.
The Cal State Northridge game at Pepperdine will only be the 13th meeting between the two schools ... The Waves lead the series 8-4 ... Last year at The Matadome, CSUN chalked up a 95-92 victory as three Matador players tallied double-digit numbers ... Jordan Noblitt came off the bench to score a team-high 22 points ... Jonathan Heard added 20 points and a career-high 12 rebounds ... Calvin Chitwood added 18 points ... Gregg Barlow scored 24 points to lead Pepperdine ... Willie Galick, who has transferred from Pepperdine to Cal State Northridge, played 15 minutes with three rebounds ... Galick will redshirt this year at CSUN due to NCAA transfer rules ... Seven times both teams have met on the Malibu campus with the Waves holding a 6-1 advantage ... The team's only victory at Pepperdine took place on Dec. 19, 1996 when the Matadors prevailed 68-57 ... The victory took place during head coach Bobby Braswell's first year as head coach at Cal State Northridge, and his second career win as a head coach ... This will be the first of two meetings between Cal State Northridge and a WCC (West Coast Conference) school ... On Dec. 8, the Matadors travel to Spokane to face 14th-ranked Gonzaga in a 5:00 p.m. tipoff.
Bobby Braswell is in his 12th season as head coach at Cal State Northridge ... Braswell has coached 326 games in his duties as head coach, and has produced a record of 169-157 ... Braswell has guided Cal State Northridge to postseason play in each of his previous eleven seasons, reaching the conference tournament championship game on four occasions ... In past seasons under Braswell, the Matadors have prided themselves on tough defense and a productive offense ... Last year, the Matadors led the Big West Conference in rebounding margin (+6.9) and steals (8.97) ... Braswell's teams have been ranked in the Top 25 in steals nationally in ten of the last eleven seasons ... Braswell will be assisted by second year assistant coach Louis Wilson, and newcomers Stan Johnson and James Blake ... Ryan Dodd is in his first season as Director of Basketball Operations.
Two school records may never be broken; Ollie Carter's 47 points against Westmont has lasted nearly 42 years ... Another record that has lasted for a long time is George Robnett's 24 rebounds against UC Irvine on Jan. 16, 1971 ... Senior forward Calvin Chitwood came close in last weekend's 96-85 victory over Chicago State (11/10/07) ... Chitwood collected 18 rebounds, only six short of Robnett's long standing record ... Only ten other players in the 50-year history of Matador basketball history have garnered more rebounds in a game ... Chitwood's 18 boards was the fourth-best effort by a Division I player on the first weekend of collegiate basketball for 2007-08, only eclipsed by 24 by Kansas State freshman sensation Michael Beasley, 23 by Richard Hendrix of Alabama, and 21 by Junior Hairston of Towson ... Chitwood's 18 rebounds was fifth-best by a CSUN player at The Matadome, only bettered by Robnett's 24 against UCI, 23 by Jerry Joseph against Cal State Stanislaus (12/28/68), and 19 each by Jack Dyck against Sioux Falls (1/3/75) and by Craig Nance vs Cal Poly Pomona (1/18/75) ... By the way, the Big West single game rebound record is 28 by Michael Jackson of Cal State Los Angeles against Cal State Northridge in 1971.

It has been a rough start for Pepperdine in 2007-08 ... The Waves dropped all three games during season opening action at the World Vision Invitational in Eugene, Oregon ... The Waves began the season with a 100-70 loss to Oregon (11/10/07) followed by a 70-65 decision to Western Michigan (70-65), and then a 84-76 loss to Pacific (11/12/07) ... Daniel Johnson, a 6-foot-10 freshman center, is averaging 15.7 points while 6-foot-6 freshman forward Malcom Thomas is averaging 13.0 ppg ... Thomas had 22 points in the season opener at Oregon (1/10/07) ... Vance Walberg is in his second season as head coach at Pepperdine with a 8-26 record.
The 2007-08 season marks the 50th season of intercollegiate basketball at Cal State Northridge ... Jonathan Heard and Calvin Chitwood were expected to be the dominant 1-2 scoring punch for Cal State Northridge this year, and they did not disappoint in the 2007-08 season opener as the senior duo combined for 51 points and 26 rebounds to help the Matadors to a 96-85 victory over Chicago State (11/10/07) ... Heard scored a career-high 29 points, including 19 in the second half, while Chitwood added 22 points ... Chitwood added to his all-around great numbers with a career-high 18 rebounds (ten offensive rebounds), four blocks and three steals in 38 minutes of play ... In addition to his career-high 29 points, Heard added three steals, one block and an assist in 35 minutes of action.
Cal State Northridge prepped for the regular season with two exhibition victories ... On Oct. 31, utilizing a high-paced offense and tough, pressure defense, the Matadors dominated play from the start to record a 90-54 victory over Cal State Los Angeles ... Cal State Northridge had scoring runs of 16 and eleven straight points to take a 39-23 halftime lead ... For the game, the Matadors hit 55 percent (30-for-55) from the floor, and added eleven 3-pointers in 27 attempts for 41 percent ... The Matador defense held Cal State Los Angeles to only 29 percent shooting (15-for-52) and nine percent (2-for-22) from behind the arc ... The Matadors also forced the Golden Eagles into 28 turnovers ... Calvin Chitwood led CSUN in scoring with 19 points (6-for-8 from the floor, 2-for-4 from three-point territory, and 5-for-6 from the free throw line) along with nine rebounds ... Rob Haynes added 16 points (6-for-9 from the floor, 4-for-7 from behind the arc), along with five rebounds, three assists and one steal in 26 minutes ... Deon Tresvant added 13 points (6-for-6 from the free throw line) along with five assists and two steals in 22 minutes off the bench ... Tremaine Townsend grabbed a game-high ten rebounds in 21 minutes off the bench ... On. Nov. 6, Townsend played 20 minutes off the bench, and clearly dominated play in grabbing ten rebounds and scoring 15 points to help lead Cal State Northridge to a 79-55 victory over The Master's College ... Jonathan Heard scored 21 points to lead both teams in scoring, including 3-of-4 from three-point territory and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line ... Heard, who played 27 minutes, added to his all-around game with four rebounds, two assists and two steals ... Haynes tallied 15 pints, including 4-for-6 shooting from behind the arc ... Jayme Miller added ten points and eight rebounds in 21 minutes of play ... Cal State Northridge held The Master's College to 35 percent shooting, and outrebounded the visitors, 44-33 ... The Matador defense also forced the Mustangs into 25 turnovers.
In their two exhibition victories, several players stood out ... Tremaine Townsend (Center, 6-9, 215, Junior, Phoenix, Az) grabbed 26 rebounds, scored 21 points and blocked two shots in 41 minutes off the bench ... All-conference candidate Jonathan Heard (F/G, 6-6, 195, Senior, Inglewood, Ca) scored 30 points, dished out five assists and stole four passes in 48 minutes ... Calvin Chitwood (Forward, 6-8, 220, Senior, Phoenix, Az) hit 8-of-11 shots (.727), grabbed ten rebounds, and scored 23 points (19 vs Cal State Los Angeles) in 42 minutes ... Rob Haynes (Guard, 6-4, 185, Junior, Cerritos, Ca) tallied 31 points (11-for-18 from the floor, 8-for-13 from behind the arc) in 43 minutes ... Josh Jenkins (Guard, 5-10, 185, Junior, Albuquerque, NM) dished out nine assists in the two games ... Paul Wayne (Guard, 6-1, 165, Junior, Washington, D.C.) had four assists and four steals against Cal State Los Angeles.
Cal State Northridge is picked to finish sixth in a poll of coaches and media by the Big West Conference ... The Matadors generated 31 points in the coaches poll ... UC Santa Barbara is picked to win the conference with 58 points followed by Cal Poly (52), Pacific and Cal State Fullerton each with 48 points followed by Cal State Northridge (31), UC Davis (20), Long Beach State (14) and UC Riverside (11) ... In the media poll, UC Santa Barbara collected 152 points followed by Cal Poly (138), Cal State Fullerton (114), UC Irvine (109), Pacific (92), Cal State Northridge (76), Long Beach State (52), UC Davis (43) and UC Riverside (34).
A challenging 2007-08 schedule that includes games against national powers Gonzaga and Washington highlights the 2007-08 Cal State Northridge basketball schedule ... Cal State Northridge will face a Gonzaga team which will again be one of the nation's elite collegiate basketball teams on Dec. 8 (5:00 p.m.) in Spokane ... The competition doesn't get any easier on Dec. 22 (3:00 p.m.) when the Matadors travel back to the Pacific Northwest to face Pac-10 power Washington in Seattle ... CSUN will have 13 regular season home games at The Matadome including eight Big West Conference games ... The home league slate begins on Jan. 10 against the league's newest member, UC Davis ... Long Beach State, the Big West champion in 2006-07, visits the Matadors home turf on Jan. 26 at 4:00 p.m. ... Pre-season league favorite UCSB will face CSUN at The Matadome on Mar. 6 (7:05 p.m.) ... Two CSUN men's basketball games will be televised as part of the Big West Conference television package ... CSUN will host Long Beach State on Sat., Jan. 26 (4:00 p.m.) in a game that will be televised on Fox Sports Net Prime Ticket ... On Feb. 28, the Matadors will visit Cal State Fullerton in a conference game to be televised on KVMD in the Southern California market ... Tipoff is 7:00 p.m. ... Two other non-league games will be televised ... The game at Gonzaga (Dec. 8, 5:00 p.m.) will be televised in the Spokane area, and the Dec. 22 (3:00 p.m.) non-league contest at Washington will be televised on Fox Sports Northwest ... CSUN will also have opportunities for additional appearances the final two weeks of the season when the Big West and FSN Prime Ticket select "wildcard" matchups from a pool of games ... The selections are expected to be made no later than Feb. 1 ... The television game possibilities are CSUN at UC Irvine on Mar. 1; and Cal Poly at CSUN on Mar. 8.
