The Sporting News Selects Cal State Northridge Basketball Team to Capture Big West Championship

Oct. 14, 2008

Charlotte, NC - The annual Sporting News College Basketball Magazine has hit the newsstands and like the other three national publications previously released, the Cal State Northridge men's basketball team is the choice to win the Big West Championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament.

The Matadors are picked to finish first followed by UC Santa Barbara, Pacific, Cal State Fullerton, UC Riverside, UC Davis, Long Beach State, UC Irvine and Cal Poly.

"Cal State Northridge has gone from a team with numerous questions a year ago to one that has most of the answers entering this season," said Jeff Goodman, who wrote the Big West article for The Sporting News. "... Northridge went into last season with minimal expectations, but wound up with 20 victories and a dozen league wins--largely due to the rapid development of a trio of junior college players. Guards Josh Jenkins and Deon Tresvant and skilled big man Tremaine Townsend, all in their first year with the program, combined to average more than 35 points per game a year ago, and the entire group returns."

Deon Tresvant, CSUN's top scorer (13.9 ppg) from a year ago, was named to The Sporting News All-Big West team.

"We're excited to be picked first because we were the underdog last year," said Tresvant. "But the key for us is everyone buying into what we need to do to win. We want to win the Big West and go the NCAA Tournament."

Previously, The Blue Ribbon College Yearbook, Lindy's Magazine, and Athlons College Basketball Annual picked the Matadors to win the Big West title.
