The 53rd edition of Cal State Northridge men's basketball team will be unveiled on Nov. 12, 2010, when the Matadors test the strength of the UCLA Bruins at Pauley Pavilion ... Game time is 7:30 p.m. ... But first, practice takes top priority starting on Oct. 15 when the Matadors convene for their first practice at The Matadome ... You will certainly need a game program to identify the players - ten new players (including one redshirt) dot the 2010-11 roster in addition to the seven returning players ... Before the regular season begins, Cal State Northridge will play an exhibition game against Redlands on Nov. 5 (7:05 p.m.)
The Matadors of 2010-11 will be a combination of young and old ... Ten new players (including one redshirt), join six seniors and one junior on the 17-man roster ... CSUN returns one starter who is expected to be one of top players in the conference - Lenny Daniel, who had a single season school record 44 blocks and led the Big West Conference in that category (1.52 bpg) last year ... The 6-foot-7 senior forward ranked third in the Big West with 7.8 rebounds per game ... Daniel will also become more of a focal point on offense in 2010-11 ... Last year, the honorable mention BWC selection tallied 11.7 ppg, second-best on the team ... Daniel scored double-digits in 20 games, including five games in which he scored 20 or more points ... Daniel provides an inside scoring threat while junior guard Vinnie McGhee, whose 53 (1.65 pg) three-pointers ranked ninth in the conference, provides scoring from the outside ... Six returning players started at least five games last year ... CSUN is hoping to rebound among the conference leaders after finishing in seventh place last year ... The Matadors won the regular season championships in 2008-09 and 2007-08 ... Bobby Braswell will be entering his 15th season as head coach at CSUN with a 216-202 mark (.517).
Challenging is always the description of the CSUN basketball schedule, and this year is no exception ... The Matadors open the season with games against UCLA (Nov. 12, 7:30 p.m.) and at Pac-10 champion California (Nov. 16, 7:30 p.m.) ... After the home opener against Vanguard (Nov. 20, 2 p.m.), the Matadors delve into a most challenging tournament, the 76 Classic on Nov. 25-28 at the Anaheim Convention Center ... CSUN's first round opponent (Nov. 25, 11:00 a.m., ESPNU) will be Virginia Tech, a team that returns its Top-10 scorers, will be nationally-ranked, and will be a contender in the Athletic Coast Conference (ACC) ... Other participants include Stanford, Depaul, Oklahoma State, UNLV, Tulsa and Murray State ... Five of the eight teams in the 76 Classic reached the post-season (NCAA Tournament or NIT) in 2009-10 ... Matador Memo As many as four Cal State Northridge regular seasons games will appear on ESPN's family of networks and Fox Sports Net ... CSUN's first round game at the 76 Classic against Virginia Tech at the Anaheim Convention Center on Thursday, November 25, will be televised live on ESPNU at 11 a.m. ... The following day (Friday, Nov. 26), the Matadors contest against either DePaul or Oklahoma State will be televised live on either ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU at either 11:30 a.m. or 2 p.m. ... Following an off-day on Nov. 27, CSUN's third game at the 76 Classic on Sunday, Nov. 28, may be televised on either ESPN or ESPN2 ... The conference game vs Cal Poly (1/22/11, 1:05 pm) is on Fox Sports Net (Prime Ticket) ... A new addition to the Matador coaching staff is Jay Morris, who served last year as Director of Basketball Operations at Long Beach State ...
