Athlon Sports College Basketball Annual Picks Cal State Northridge to win Big West Conference title

Sept. 22, 2008

Nashville, Tn - Athlon Sports College Basketball Magazine has hit the newsstands and the publications choice to win the Big West men's basketball title in 2008-09 is Cal State Northridge.

"Coming off a share of the school's first Big West regular season title, which earned Bobby Braswell Coach of the Year honors in the Big West, the senior-laden Matadors appear poised to make another run," said the magazine. "...Northridge will be tested early with road games at UCLA and at Stanford."

Following Cal State Northridge, Athlon Sports predicted order of finish is Cal State Fullerton in second place followed by UC Santa Barbara, Long Beach State, Pacific, UC Irvine, Cal Poly, UC Riverside and UC Davis.

Tremaine Townsend and Deon Tresvant were selected to the All-Big West first team along with Donovan Morris of Long Beach State, Chris Devine of UC Santa Barbara and of Cal State Fullerton Josh Akognon. Akognon was selected Big West Player of the Year.

Townsend, a second team all-conference selection last year, ranked first in the Big West in rebounding (9.8 rpg), blocked shots (1.2 bpg) and second in field goal percentage (.525) last season. Townsend became the first CSUN player to win the conference rebound and blocked shot titles. For the season, Townsend averaged 10.1 ppg, and also set a school record with 37 blocked shots.

Tresvant became the first player in school history to lead the team in scoring (13.9 ppg) as a reserve. Tresvant hit a team-leading 83 3-pointers, second-best in the conference and second all-time for a single season at CSUN. Tresvant also attempted 201 three-pointers, #2 all-time for a single season at CSUN. For his efforts, Tresvant gained second team All-Big West honors.

Townsend and Tresvant lead a cast of nine returning lettermen, along with four redshirts, and four incoming players who will comprise the 2008-09 active roster.
