Northridge, Calif. - Aqeel Quinn, a 6-foot-4, 185-pound guard who helped lead Leuzinger (Lawndale, Ca) high school to the California Southern Section Division 1-A championship in 2009-10, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball at Cal State Northridge.
His signing was announced today by Matador head coach Bobby Braswell.
"Aqeel is a student-athlete who we think will have a special career on the Division I level," said Braswell. "He's a highly skilled point-guard at 6-foot-4. Aqeel has a wonderful presence with the skill level to score, pass the ball and is very intelligent. He has a high basketball IQ that will benefit him throughout his career."
Quinn scored 13 points as Leuzinger raced to a convincing 58-39 victory over Santa Monica High School in the CIF championship contest in 2009-10.
During his senior season, Quinn averaged 12.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, four assists and 1.3 steals per game as the Olympians chalked up a 25-7 season.
Quinn's best efforts included 31 points, eight rebounds and seven assists against Washington, 25 points against Miracosta (Manhattan Beach) and 23 points and six assists against Centennial.
Quinn was recruited by such notables as Virginia Tech and Colorado, and Big West schools Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara, but Cal State Northridge was his top choice.
"I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the campus at Cal State Northridge," said Quinn. "I loved the diversity at CSUN, and the players and coaches were very friendly during my visit. During the summer, I want to get better and stronger, and arrive on campus at Cal State Northridge to help them win a Big West championship."
"Aqeel did well for himself," his high school Reggie Morris told the South Bay Daily Breeze. "... The coaching staff (Cal State Northridge) is well respected, and it gives him an opportunity to play right away. Aqeel is a great kid, one of the best kids who ever played for me."
Quinn's success at Leuzinger earned him first team All-Bay League and first team All-CIF Southern Section Division 1-A honors.
Quinn becomes the third basketball player this Spring to sign a National Letter of Intent with the Matador basketball program. Earlier this week, Joshua Greene (6-foot-0, 165-pound, guard) and John Hayward-Mayhew (6-foot-8, 220-pound, forward) signed National Letter of Intents with Cal State Northridge. Greene averaged 19.8 points, 8.6 rebounds, 6.4 assists and 2.8 steals per game as a point-guard and shooting guard during his senior season at Community Charter High School in Lakeview Terrace (Calif.) Hayward-Mayhew averaged nearly eleven points and more than six rebounds at Salt Lake Community College last season. Hayward-Mayhew prepped at South Eugene High School where he averaged 19.6 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game during his senior campaign.
In addition to Quinn, Hayward-Mayhew and Greene signing this Spring with CSUN, back in December, 2009, Frankie Eteuati and Jordan Mitchell signed National Letters of Intent with Cal State Northridge.
Eteuati, a 6-foot-9, 195-pound forward from Cathedral High School in Los Angeles, Calif., averaged 22 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two blocks per game during the 2009-10 campaign to help his team to a 17-12 record. Eteuati's scoring efforts included 42 points against Redondo Union HS, 38 points against Loyola of Los Angeles HS, 26 points against Taft HS and 25 points against Serra (Gardena).
For his exceptional senior season, Eteuati gained first team All-League and All-CIF Southern Section honors.
Mitchell, a 6-foot-9, 190-pound forward, hails from Junipero Serra High School in Gardena, Calif. where he helped lead the Cavaliers to the California state Division III boys championship in 2009-10 with a 63-59 overtime decision over perennial power Bishop O'Dowd High School. The Cavaliers were 35-2 overall, 5-0 in the Del Rey League, reached a state ranking of third, and 13th in the nation.
Mitchell, in 2009-10, averaged eight points, ten rebounds and four blocks per game. For his efforts, Mitchell was nominated as a McDonald's High School All-American in addition to being an All-League, All-Daily Breeze and All-CIF Southern Section choice.
