May 18, 2010
Northridge, Calif. - Joshua Greene (6-foot-0, 165-pounds), who averaged 19.8 points, 8.6 rebounds, 6.4 assists and 3.8 steals per game as a point-guard and shooting guard during his senior season at Community Charter High School in Lakeview Terrace (Calif.), has signed a National Letter of Intent with Cal State Northridge.
Greene's signing brings to two the number of Spring recruits who have signed National Letters of Intent and who will be entering the Cal State Northridge men's basketball program in the Fall of 2010, according to Matador head coach Bobby Braswell.
According to Braswell, a third spring recruit will be announced on Wednesday (5/19/10).
"We are happy to welcome Josh into the Matador basketball family," said Braswell. "He is a very talented player who can shoot the ball from behind the three-point arc. He has a great defensive presence and really gets after people on defense. He is a defensive bulldog. He will also give us an offensive punch with his ability to shoot from beyond the arc. He is a combo guard who can play both the off-guard and the point-guard positions."
Greene's senior stats are just short of sensational. In averaging 19.8 points per game, Greene, who is left-handed, hit .572 (204-for-355) from the floor, an incredible .606 (140-for-231) from 3-point territory, and .869 (125-for-145) from the free throw line.
"I have always dreamed of playing Division I basketball and I appreciate the opportunity given to me by Coach Braswell at Cal State Northridge," said Greene. "The competition will be much tougher and more competitive, but I welcome the opportunity."
In all, Greene scored a team-leading 595 points during his senior season at Community Charter High School.
In leading his team to a 28-6 record, a first place showing in league play with an undefeated mark and the "Free Lance CIF championship". Greene scored in double-figures in every game. In 20 of the 34 games, Greene scored 20 or more points. Greene started the 2009-10 season with 27 points against Leuzinger HS of Lawndale, 22 points against Horizon HS of San Diego, and 26 points against Carson HS of Los Angeles. His best scoring effort of the year was a 32-point effort (7-of-10 from the floor, 5-for-6 from behind the arc, and 13-of-14 from the free throw line) against Cienega HS of Arizona.
Greene gained numerous all-tournament honors during his tenure at Community Charter High School. Greene was voted the Most Outstanding Player on the Titans team.
Despite his size, Greene grabbed ten or more rebounds in nine games.
In chalking up 6.4 assists per game, Greene had five or more assists in 26 of the team's 34 games. That included three games in which Greene collected ten or more assists. His season-best assist games were eleven against View Park HS and Los Angeles Adventist.
Greene joins John Hayward-Mayhew, a 6-foot-8, 220-pound forward from Salt Lake Community College, who signed a National Letter of Intent with the Matadors on Monday (5/17/10). Hayward-Mayhew averaged nearly eleven points and more than six rebounds at Salt Lake Community College last season. Hayward-Mayhew prepped at South Eugene High School where he averaged 19.6 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game during his senior campaign.
Overall, Greene's signing brings to four the number of basketball recruits who will be attending Cal State Northridge in the Fall of 2010. In addition to Greene and Hayward-Mayhew, back in December of 2009, Frankie Eteuati and Jordan Mitchell signed National Letters of Intent.
Eteuati, a 6-foot-9, 195-pound forward from Cathedral High School in Los Angeles, Calif., averaged 22 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two blocks per game during the 2009-10 campaign to help his team to a 17-12 record. Eteuati's scoring efforts included 42 points against Redondo Union HS, 38 points against Loyola of Los Angeles HS, 26 points against Taft HS and 25 points against Serra (Gardena).
For his exceptional senior season, Eteuati gained first team All-League and All-CIF Southern Section honors.
Mitchell, a 6-foot-9, 190-pound forward, hails from Junipero Serra High School in Gardena, Calif. where he helped lead the Cavaliers to the California State Division III boys championship in 2009-10 with a 63-59 overtime decision over perennial power Bishop O'Dowd High School. The Cavaliers were 35-2 overall, 5-0 in the Del Rey League, reached a state ranking of third, and 13th in the nation.
Mitchell, in 2009-10, averaged eight points, ten rebounds and four blocks per game. For his efforts, Mitchell was nominated as a McDonald's High School All-American in addition to being an All-League, All-Daily Breeze and All-CIF Southern Section choice.
