Northridge, Calif. - John Hayward-Mayhew, a 6-foot-8, 220-pound forward who averaged nearly eleven points and more than six rebounds per game at Salt Lake Community College last season, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball at Cal State Northridge.
Hayward-Mayhew is the first of three basketball recruits during the Spring to be announced this week by Matador head coach Bobby Braswell.
"We're extremely pleased to have John join the Matador basketball program," said Braswell. "He brings rebounding, athleticism and scoring strength around the basket. We are looking forward to him having a great career at Cal State Northridge."
In helping lead SLCC to a 24-8 record last year, Hayward-Mayhew led the team in field goal percentage (.544, 111-for-240), and a respectable 73 percent from the free throw line. His scoring and rebounding efforts led him to all-league status.
"I like the coaches and the players at Cal State Northridge, and I am hoping to contribute to the team's return to the NCAA Tournament," said Hayward-Mayhew. "Cal State Northridge is a good fit."
Hayward-Mayhew was one of five players to average in double-figures in scoring.
Hayward-Mayhew led the team in scoring in seven games including efforts of 22 points (8-for-9 from the floor) against College of Eastern Utah, and 19 points against Colorado Northwestern.
In eleven games, Hayward-Mayhew led SLCC in rebounding including 12 against North Idaho College and ten rebounds in two games.
Hayward-Mayhew originally started his collegiate career at Missouri State but only played in seven games during the 2008-09 season before transferring to Salt Lake Community College last season. Hayward-Mayhew will enter Cal State Northridge as a junior, thus will have two seasons of eligibility.
Hayward-Mayhew graduated from South Eugene High School in Oregon. While in high school, Hayward-Mayhew was a McDonald's All-American candidate where he averaged 19.6 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game during his senior season. Hayward-Mayhew helped lead South Eugene High School to the Oregon State Final-16 during his senior campaign. For his efforts, Hayward-Mayhew gained first team All-Southwest Conference honors and was invited to play in the Oregon All-Star game.
His best games during his senior season included a 37-point effort and a 16-rebound effort. His 262 rebounds broke the South Eugene HS single season school record.
Hayward-Mayhew started all three seasons in high school. During his junior campaign, Hayward-Mayhew averaged 15.4 points and 7.2 rebounds per game while claiming honorable mention all-conference and all-state honors.
Hayward-Mayhew joins two high school seniors who signed National Letters of Intent with Cal State Northridge back in December, 2009, Frankie Eteuati and Jordan Mitchell.
Eteuati, a 6-foot-9, 195-pound forward from Cathedral High School in Los Angeles, Calif., averaged 22 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two blocks per game during the 2009-10 campaign to help his team to a 17-12 record.
Eteuati's scoring efforts included 42 points against Redondo Union HS, 38 points against Loyola of Los Angeles HS, 26 points against Taft HS and 25 points against Serra (Gardena).
For his exceptional senior season, Eteuati gained first team All-League and All-CIF Southern Section honors.
Mitchell, a 6-foot-9, 190-pound forward, hails from Junipero Serra High School in Gardena, Calif. where he helped lead the Cavaliers to the California state Division III boys championship in 2009-10 with a 63-59 overtime decision over perennial power Bishop O'Dowd High School. The Cavaliers were 35-2 overall, 5-0 in the Del Rey League, reached a state ranking of third, and 13th in the nation.
Mitchell, in 2009-10, averaged eight points, ten rebounds and four blocks per game. For his efforts, Mitchell was nominated as a McDonald's High School All-American in addition to being an All-League, All-Daily Breeze and All-CIF Southern Section choice.
