The Cal State Northridge basketball team is in a better mood these days ... Previous to last Wednesday's (2/17/10) 73-68 win over Cal Poly, CSUN had lost their previous two games in the final seconds ... A well-earned five-point Big West Conference win over the Mustangs helped erase a 59-57 loss at CS Bakersfield (2/10/10) when CSUB hit a basket at the top of the key at the buzzer, and an historic 113-112 overtime decision to CS Fullerton (2/13/10) ... CSF won the game on a basket and free throw in the final seconds ... CSUN now takes a break in the BWC schedule to host Drake in an ESPN Bracketbuster game on Saturday (2/20/10, 7:05 pm).
Hang on to your seats ... Matador basketball has been intense from start to finish ... Nine games (3-6) have been decided by five points ... Eight CSUN games (2-6) have been decided by three points or less ... CSUN has played four one-point games (1-3) this year ... Three of the four one-point losses were against Big West schools, a 73-72 loss at Cal Poly (1/23/10), a 69-68 loss to LBS (1/28/10) and a 113-112 overtime decision to Cal State Fullerton (2/10/10) ... Prior to this year, CSUN had played in only three one-point games against BWC schools since joining the league in 2001-02 ... CSUN hasn't played four one-point contests since the 1992-93 campaign ... The two teams combined for 225 points, 155 field goal attempts, 110 free throw attempts, 109 rebounds, 81 free throws made, 75 fouls, eleven player foul outs, 17 ties and 15 lead changes ... Ten players scored in double figures ... CSUN's bench outscored CSF's bench, 77-28 ... The nine-member Big West schools have played 15,415 games dating back to the 1921-22 season ... Daniel has recorded a team-best six double-doubles (points-rebounds) ... That stat is second-best in the conference behind LBS's T.J. Robinson's 15 ... Kenny Daniels (6-4, 210, Sr, F/G, St. Louis, Mo) is fifth and ninth, respectively, in field goal pct. (.500) and scoring (14.8 ppg) ... Daniels also ranks fourth in free throw percentage (.810) ... Vinnie McGhee (6-0, 165, RS So, G, Oakland, Ca) is eighth in the BWC in three-pointers made at 1.7 per game ... Michael Lizarraga (6-7, 230, Junior, Forward, Dixon, Ca.) continues to be an inspiration and a hero to many people ... Lizarraga is believed to be the only deaf player competing in NCAA Division I major college basketball ... Lizarraga has been the subject of numerous feature stories including the Los Angeles Daily News (2/4/10), ESPNU, mattbrownphoto.com and upcoming major features on Channel 2 in Los Angeles, the Daily Sundial and during halftime of the CSUN-UC Irvine game on Feb. 27 on Fox Sports ... Lizarraga has been a starter in eight of the team's 26 games ... His best game of the year was an eight-point, six rebound, three block and two steal performance at Washington (12/6/09) ... Lizarraga has grabbed six or more rebounds in five games.
With at least six more games to play (four conference, one non-league, at least one Big West Tournament game), CSUN is on pace to break the school record for single season free throw attempts ... CSUN has attempted 761 free throws (#7 all-time in school history), an average of 29.2 attempts per game ... At that pace, CSUN would finish the year with 936, easily breaking the school record of 868 (26 games) during the 1966-67 season ... The 761 charity tosses ranks CSUN fourth nationally behind Kansas St. (792), Vermont (767), and Wyoming (765), according to the NCAA ... Cal State Northridge will be among eight schools that will be a part of the fourth annual 76 Classic to be held on Thanksgiving weekend in 2010 at the Anaheim Convention Center ... In addition to the Matadors, the tourney field includes Oklahoma State (Big 12), Penn State (Big Ten), DePaul (Big East), Stanford (Pac-10), Tulsa (Conference USA), UNLV (Mountain West) and Virginia Tech (ACC) ... The 76 Classic features four games each day through three days, Nov. 25, 26 and 28 ... Each team will compete in one game per day, advancing through a backet-tournament format ... The two teams that remain undefeated throughout will face off in a championship game on Sunday, Nov. 28 ... The BWC is hosting the 76 Classic ... Games will be televised on ESPN, ESPNU and ESPN2 ... The BWC and the Honda Center (home of the NHL's Anaheim Ducks) have teamed up to form a five-year partnership to host the annual men and women's post-season basketball tournies beginning in 2011 ... The Big West Tournament is the oldest NCAA Division I post-season basketball tournament in the west dating back to 1976 ... From behind the arc, the stats show an impressive slate of six games in which CSUN has held the enemy under 32 percent from behind the arc ... In the nine wins, Cal State Northridge has outrebounded the opposition six times including 54 rebounds against Seattle (1/11/10) and 50 against Cal State Bakersfield (11/20/09) ... CSUN's defense resulted in opponents lows (47 points, field goals made with 15, and field goal attempts with 47) in a 63-47 win at UC Riverside (2/4/10) ... The latest Big West overall stats show CSUN is first in rebounding (38.0 rpg), second in scoring (71.8 ppg) and steals (7.5 spg), and third in field goal percentage defense (.416) and three-point field goal percentage defense (.337) ... The 112 points scored by CSUN vs Cal State Fullerton (2/13/10) is the second--best effort by a Big West team this year ... Cal State Fullerton tallied 113 points against CSUN (2/13/10).
Drake University brings a 12-16 overall record into Saturday's game against CSUN ... Three players are scoring in double figures led by Josh Young (6-1, 174, Senior, Guard, Lawton, Ok) at 14.1 ppg, Ryan Wedel (5-11, 177, Junior, Guard, Minneapolis, Ks.) at 11.5 ppg, and Adam Templeton (6-6, 220, Senior, Guard, Rapid City, SD) at 10.0 ppg ... Templeton is the team leader in rebounds (7.3 rpg) ... Seth VanDeest (6-10, 223, Fr., Center, Bettendorf, Ia) has 47 blocks in 28 games ...
