Saturday's game at Long Beach State (2/6/10, 5:00 p.m.) will have a special meaning on several fronts for CSUN head coach Bobby Braswell ... Not only will Braswell direct CSUN into another Big West Conference contest against pre-season league favorite Long Beach State, Braswell will also witness the retirement of Bryon Russell's number (#32) by LBS ... Braswell recruited Russell while he was an assistant coach at LBS (1989-1992) ... Russell are close friends ... In fact, Russell and another former Braswell recruit, Lucious Harris, provided a substantial amount of their own money to help build the team and locker room at Cal State Northridge ... Russell is one of 17 former 49er players to score at least 1,000 points (1,003 pts) and is ranked in the Top-10 in rebounds and steals in the 49er record book.
Pushing forward to the next game at Long Beach State (2/6/10, 5:00 p.m.), but a couple closing notes about CSUN's 63-47 win at UC Riverside (2/4/10) ... CSUN's defense resulted in opponents lows (47 points, field goals made with 15, and field goal attempts with 47) ... The ten CSUN three-pointers and 12 steals were season-bests ... Nine players played at least 13 minutes with three reserves (Raymond Cody, Kenny Daniels, Michael Lizarraga) playing 25, 21 and 13 minutes respectively ... CSUN reserves accounted for 35 of the team's 63 points.
With at least 10 more games to play (7 conference, 2 non-league, at least one Big West Tournament game), CSUN is on pace to break the school record for single season free throw attempts ... CSUN has attempted 633 free throws, an average of 28.8 attempts per game ... At that pace, CSUN would finish the year with 921, easily breaking the school record of 868 (26 games) during the 1966-67 season ... The 633 charity tosses ranks CSUN fifth nationally behind Kansas St. (697), Wyoming (658), Morgan St. (656) and New Mexico (635), according to the NCAA ... The 49 free throw attempts vs Seattle (1/11/10) is third-best for a single game in school history, and the 34 made free throws was fifth-best for a single game.
Six CSUN games have been decided by three points or less ... CSUN has played three one-point games this year ... That hasn't happened since the 1992-93 campaign when CSUN played four one-point contests ... Two of the three one-point losses this year were against Big West schools, a 73-72 loss at Cal Poly (1/23/10) and a 69-68 loss to LBS (1/28/10) ... Prior to this year, CSUN had played in only three one-point games against BWC schools since joining the league in 2001-02.
Raymond Cody (6-5, 180, Junior, Guard, Lancaster, Ca) enjoyed a notable effort in his last game at UC Riverside (2/4/10) ... Cody had averaged only 4.1 ppg entering the game but proceeded to score a season-high 18 points (7-for-8 from the floor, 4-for-4 from behind the arc), added a season-high six rebounds along with two steals in 25 minutes off the bench ... Lenny Daniel (6-7, 210, Junior, Forward, Richmond, Va), who is averaging 11.2 points and 7.9 rebounds per game, has recorded a team-best five double-doubles (points-rebounds) ... That stat is second-best in the conference behind LBS's T.J. Robinson's 13.
CSUN has seen a lot of the country during this season ... The travel itinerary has included games at Purdue (11/13/09), at the Pre-Season NIT Tournament at Arizona State (11/16, 11/17/09), at Western Kentucky (11/23/09), at Washington (12/6/09), at Denver (12/8/09), at Colorado (12/22/09) and at Seattle (1/19/10) ... The longest trip was the game at Purdue (11/13/09) in West Lafayette, Ind., a distance from CSUN to Purdue of 2,113 miles ... The trip from CSUN to Western Kentucky (11/23/09) was 1,847 miles.
Several CSUN players are among the stat leaders in the Big West ... Kenny Daniels (6-4, 210, Sr, F, St. Louis, Mo) is seventh and eleventh, respectively, in field goal pct. (.477) and scoring (13.5 ppg) ... Daniels also ranks fourth in free throw percentage (.800) ... Lenny Daniel (6-7, 210, Jr, F, Richmond, Va) ranks second at 7.9 rpg ... Daniel ranks third in blocked shots (23, 1.2 bpg) ... Vinnie McGhee (6-0, 165, RS So, G, Oakland, Ca) is fifth in the BWC in three-pointers made at 2.0 per game.
Cal State Northridge will be among eight schools that will be a part of the fourth annual 76 Classic to be held on Thanksgiving weekend in 2010 at the Anaheim Convention Center ... In addition to the Matadors, the tourney field includes Oklahoma State (Big 12), Penn State (Big Ten), DePaul (Big East), Stanford (Pac-10), Tulsa (Conference USA), UNLV (Mountain West) and Virginia Tech (ACC) ... The 76 Classic features four games each day through three days, Nov. 25, 26 and 28 ... Each team will compete in one game per day, advancing through a backet-tournament format ... The two teams that remain undefeated throughout will face off in a championship game on Sunday, Nov. 28 ... The BWC is hosting the 76 Classic ... Games will be televised on ESPN, ESPNU and ESPN2 ... The BWC and the Honda Center (home of the NHL's Anaheim Ducks) have teamed up to form a five-year partnership to host the annual men and women's post-season basketball tournies beginning in 2011 ... The Big West Tournament is the oldest NCAA Division I post-season basketball tournament in the west dating back to 1976 ... The Big West Tournament has been held at the Anaheim Convention Center (1977-82 and 2001-2010).
The 2009-10 season marks the 52nd season of Cal State Northridge basketball ... Since the program's inception in 1958-59, CSUN has posted an all-time record of 686-729 (.485) ... In the 1,415 games that CSUN has played since the inaugural 1958-59 campaign, the Matadors have scored 104,408 points.
Several former CSUN players are enjoying playing professional basketball in Europe ... The list includes Ian Boylan (Austria), Markus Carr (Vienna, Austria), Jayme Miller (Holland, The Netherlands), Jonathan Heard (Chile), Calvin Chitwood (Japan), Ron Haynes (Finland) and Tremaine Townsend (Prague, Czech Republic) ... Boylan (2001-05) is CSUN's second all-time leading scorer (1,160 points), Carr (1998-02) is #1 all-time in assists (767), Miller (2006-08) was a highly productive player for two seasons, Heard (2004-08) is #3 all-time in scoring (1,362 points), Chitwood (2004-08) is tenth all-time in scoring (1,170 points), Haynes (2005-09) is second all-time in three-pointers (163), and Townsend (2007-09) is ninth all-time in rebounds (537).
The latest Big West overall stats show CSUN is first in rebounding (37.7 rpg), second in steals (7.9 spg) and blocked shots (62, 2.8 bpg), and third in scoring offense (71.5 ppg) and field goal percentage defense (.418) ... The 98 points scored by CSUN over Seattle (1/11/10) is the second--best effort by a Big West team this year ... UC Davis scored 99 points against Winston-Salem State (11/15/09).
The Matador record book is in for an update in 2009-10 ... Lenny Daniel (6-7, 210, Junior, Forward, Richmond, Va) collected five blocks against UC Riverside (1/14/10), one short of the school record ... Daniel now has 23 blocks this year, and is tied for the tenth position in the CSUN record book held by Cliff Higgins (1983-84) ... Kenny Daniels (6-4, 210, Senior, Forward, St. Louis, Mo) had 13 free throws against Idaho (12/3/09) which ranks seventh-best in the school record book ... Daniels' 39 points vs Idaho (12/3/09) is third-best for a single game in CSUN history ... Only 40 points by Mark Cooley at Cal State Fullerton (2/18/67) and a school record 47 points by Ollie Carter vs Westmont (2/1/66) are better ... Daniels hit 12-of-17 shots along with 13 of 15 free throws ... Daniels completed the evening with ten rebounds in 31 minutes of play ... The 39 points is the most by a BWC player in 2009-10.
The Matadors will make five regular season television appearances during the 2009-10 season ... Cal State Northridge made its Fox Sports debut on Dec. 6 when the Matadors took on the Washington Huskies on FSN Northwest ... The Northridge-Colorado contest on Dec. 22 was seen on FSN Rocky Mountain ... The Matadors will make three appearances as part of the Big West television package ... Cal State Northridge will appear on FSN West on Feb. 6 (at Long Beach State), Feb. 17 (Cal Poly) and Feb. 27 (at UC Irvine) ... Last season, Cal State Northridge was on television a school record nine times.

Robinson (6-8, 210, Sophomore, Forward, West Haven, Ct) at 15.4 ppg ... Robinson also is the team's rebound leader (10.4 rpg, #1 in the BWC) ... Robinson has put together a league-best 13 double-doubles ... A layup basket by LBS's Casper Ware (5-10, 175, Soph., Cerritos, Ca) gave the 49ers a 69-68 victory over Cal State Northridge in their last game played on Jan. 28, 2010 ... The win gives Long Beach State a 27-20 advantage in the 47-game series ... T.J. Robinson (6-8, 210, Soph., Forward, West Haven, Ct) recorded one of his league-leading 13 double-doubles (points-rebounds) with 17 points and 13 rebounds for Long Beach State ... Vinnie McGhee (6-0, 165, RS Soph., Guard, Oakland, Ca) and Willie Galick (6-8, 225, Senior, Nanaimo, B.C.) came off the bench for CSUN to combine for 31 points ... McGhee had 17 points (5-for-8 from 3--point territory) in 23 minutes of play ... Galick scored 14 points along with and three assists in 21 minutes.
Bobby Braswell is in his 14th season as head coach of the Cal State Northridge Matadors ... His overall record is 214-194 (.525) ... Braswell has guided CSUN to back-to-back Big West regular season championships (2007-08, 2008-09) ... For his efforts, Braswell was awarded Big West Coach of the Year honors in both seasons ...
