Feb. 2, 2009

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - In helping lead Cal State Northridge to a pair of Big West road victories over the weekend, senior Josh Jenkins earned Big West Co-Player of the Week honors, the Big West Conference announced Monday. In the Matadors' victories over UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly, Jenkins averaged 15 points and six assists while knocking down seven 3-pointers.

In CSUN's 72-70 victory at UCSB, Jenkins finished with 13 points, five assists and a steal in 25 minutes of action. He was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line and 2-of-3 from beyond the 3-point arc. His biggest assist of the game came on Vincent Cordell's game-winning basket with 11 seconds left in the contest.

Two days later, Jenkins came through with 18 points and seven assists in Northridge's 79-68 win at Cal Poly, a game that was broadcast on Fox Sports Prime Ticket. Against the Mustangs, he knocked down a career-high five 3-pointers and was 3-of-4 from the free throw line.

Matador Head Coach Bobby Braswell was happy to see his senior point guard earn the distinction.

"Josh has had a fine season for us and did a great job this weekend managing the game," said Braswell. "I have been very pleased to watch his progression over the course of the season."

For the season, Jenkins is averaging 10.6 points and 6.8 assists. His 120 dimes stand just outside the all-time top 10 in school history for a single season, only four shy of a tie for ninth in school history. His 311 career assists rank fifth in school history and he stands at 13th in the nation in assists-per-game in all of Division I through Feb. 1.

Cal State Fullerton's Josh Akognon shared the weekly honors with Jenkins.

Northridge now stands in second place in the Big West standings at 6-3, a half game back of Long Beach State, which enters the week 6-2.

The Matadors play once this week, hosting Cal State Bakersfield in a non-conference match at The Matadome on Feb. 5. Tip-off between the Matadors and Runners is slated for 7 p.m.
