The Matadors stand at 2-3 in the Big West Conference and 7-11 overall ... The Matadors have won their last two conference games, including a gritty 78-72 victory at Cal State Fullerton (1/16/10) ... It was the third straight win over the Titans on their home court ... Cal State Northridge will be among eight schools that will be a part of the fourth annual 76 Classic to be held on Thanksgiving weekend in 2010 at the Anaheim Convention Center ... In addition to the Matadors, the tournament field will included Oklahoma State (Big 12), Penn State (Big Ten), DePaul (Big East), Stanford (Pac-10), Tulsa (Conference USA), UNLV (Mountain West) and Virginia Tech (ACC) ... The 76 Classic features four games each day through three days, Nov. 25, 26 and 28 ... Each team will compete in one game per day, advancing through a backet-tournament format ... The two teams that remain undefeated throughout will face off in a championship game on Sunday, Nov. 28 ... The Big West Conference is hosting the 76 Classic ... Games will be televised on ESPN, ESPNU and ESPN2 ... The Big West Conference and the Honda Center (home of the NHL's Anaheim Ducks) have teamed up to form a five-year partnership to host the annual men and women's post-season basketball tournament beginning in 2011 ... The Big West Tournament is the oldest NCAA Division I post-season basketball tournament in the west dating back to 1976 ... Lenny Daniel (6-7, 210, Junior, Forward, Richmond, Va), who averaged a double-double in three CSUN victories last week has earned his first career Big West Men's Basketball Player of the Week accolade ... Daniel posted averages of 13.7 points, 10.7 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game to help lift the Matadors to victories over Seattle University (98-90, 1/11/10), UC Riverside (64-50, 1/14/10) and Cal State Fullerton (78-72, 1/16/10) ... Daniel led the Matadors in rebound in each game and played 105 out of 120 minutes in the three games.
During CSUN's recent three game winning streak, defense took center stage in the team's success ... During that time, opponents shot .376 (67-of-178) from the floor ... From three-point territory, the opposition only hit 24-of-72 shots from behind the arc for .333 ... The Matadors forced 48 turnovers in the three games, and collected 21 steals and eleven blocks ... In the 64-50 win over UC Riverside (1/14/10), CSUN gave up a season-low 50 points, held the Highlanders to only 29 percent shooting (15 percent in the second half), and outrebounded UCR (41-34) ... A 17-2 run in the last 6:38 of the game turned a 48-47 UCR lead into CSUN's eleventh straight victory over the Highlanders.
The latest Big West overall stats show that CSUN is first in rebounding (37.9 rpg), second in steals (7.7 spg) and scoring offense (71.9 ppg), and fourth in blocked shots (47, 2.6 bpg) ... The 98 points scored by CSUN over Seattle (1/11/10) is the second--best effort by a Big West team this year ... UC Davis scored 99 points against Winston-Salem State (11/15/09).
The 2009-10 season marks the 52nd season of Cal State Northridge basketball ... Since the program's inception in 1958-59, the Matadors have posted an all-time record of 684-727 (.485) ... In the 1,411 games that Cal State Northridge has played since the inaugural 1958-59 campaign, the Matadors have scored 104,128 points.
The Matadors will make five (possibly six) regular season television appearances during the 2009-10 season ... Cal State Northridge made its Fox Sports debut on Dec. 6 when the Matadors took on the Washington Huskies on FSN Northwest ... The Northridge-Colorado contest on Dec. 22 was seen on FSN Rocky Mountain ... The Matadors will make three (possibly four) appearances as part of the Big West television package ... The Cal State Northridge-Cal Poly series (83 games) is the oldest in CSUN history ... The Matadors and Mustangs have played each other 83 times with Cal Poly holding a 43-40 lead ... However, Cal State Northridge has won the last four games including a 79-68 decision last year at Mott Gym ... Four CSUN starters scored in double figures with Josh Jenkins and Rodrigue Mels scoring 18 and 16 points, respectively ... Tremaine Townsend collected nine rebounds while Mels added seven.
Bobby Braswell is in his 14th season as head coach of the Cal State Northridge Matadors ... His overall record is 212-192 (.525) ... Braswell has guided CSUN to back-to-back Big West regular season championships (2007-08, 2008-09) ... For his efforts, Braswell was awarded Big West Coach of the Year honors in both seasons ...
