CSUN Hosts Seattle In Non-League Contest

Northridge Notes A non-league rematch and a return to Big West Conference competition highlights the two games on the Cal State Northridge (5-12 overall, 1-3 Big West) docket this week ... A couple weeks ago, January 8, 2011, the Matadors traveled to the Pacific Northwest to face Seattle University ... The Redhawks (7-12 overall) prevailed, 65-58, despite the fact Cal State Northridge held Seattle University to only 37 percent shooting, 21 percent from behind the arc, and forcing the Redhawks into 20 turnovers ... The two teams will clash again on Wednesday, January 19, 2011, this time at CSUN's home court, The Matadome, at 7:05 p.m. ... Following the game against Seattle, Cal State Northridge returns to Big West Conference action against Cal Poly on Saturday, January 25, 2011, at The Matadome ... Game time is 1:05 p.m. ... The game will be televised on Fox Sports Prime Ticket ... Lenny Daniel (6-8, 205, Senior, Forward, Richmond, Va) is certainly make a case for Big West first team honors ... Daniel is third in the league in scoring (16.9 ppg) and rebounding (9.7 rpg), #1 in field goal percentage (.572), and #4 in blocked shots (17, 1.00 bpg) ... Daniel has generated nine double-doubles (points-rebounds) this year, second-best in the Big West Conference.

In helping Cal State Northridge to an 86-66 victory over DePaul (11/26/10) of the Big East Conference, Daniel scored a career-high 31 points (11-for-15 from the floor) along with a game-high ten rebounds ... The 31 points scored by Daniel against DePaul were the most points scored by any player in the 76 Classic, and the third-best scoring effort in the four-year history of the tournament ... The 31-point, ten-rebound performance against DePaul also gave Cal State Northridge its first victory over a Big East school in the 53-year history of Matador history ... In the first game of the 76 Classic, Daniel collected 13 rebounds against Virginia Tech (11/25/10), the most by any player in the 76 Classic ... In the final game of the 76 Classic on Sunday, Daniel scored 24 points (9-for-12 from the floor) along with eight rebounds and two blocks against Tulsa ... *** Daniel has blocked 17 shots (#4 in the BWC) this year to give him 61 for his career, sixth-best in school history ... Daniel is only short of catching Calvin Chitwood (2004-08) in fifth-place on the career blocks list at Cal State Northridge.
*** Lenny Daniel (6-8, 205, Senior, Forward, Richmond, Va), who has collected double-digit rebounds in ten games this year, is trying to accomplish a feat that hasn't been accomplished since the 1971-72 season ... *** Five Cal State Northridge men's basketball games will appear on ESPN's family of networks and Fox Sports Net.
*** CSUN's game at Denver (12/4/10) was televised on Fox Sports Net Rocky Mountain. *** CSUN's three games (Virginia Tech, DePaul, Tulsa) at the 76 Classic (Nov. 25-28) were televised live on ESPNU.
*** One Big West Conference game will be televised on Fox Sports Net (Prime) ... That game will be CSUN's home contest against Cal Poly on Saturday, January 22 ... Game time at The Matadome is 1:00 p.m.
*** CSUN will have other opportunities to be on television during the 2010-11 season ... The ESPN Brackbuster games that are slated either Friday (Feb. 18), Saturday (Feb. 19) or Sunday (Feb. 20) will be on either ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU ... The semi-finals of the Big West Tournament on Friday, March 11, will be televised on ESPNU ... The Big West Championship game will be seen on ESPN2.
*** Seattle University arrives at Cal State Northridge with a 7-12 overall record.
*** Four Redhawk players average in double figures led by Aaron Broussard (6-5, 250, Junior, Forward, Federal Way, Wa) at 14.7 ppg, Sterling Carter (6-0, 200, Freshman, Guard, Seattle, Wa) at 12.9 ppg, Alex Jones (6-8, 215, Senior, Forward, Phoenix, Az) at 11.7 ppg and Cervante Burrell (5-10, 170, Junior, Guard, Sacramento, Ca) at 10.8 ppg ... Carter has a team-leading 47 three-pointers ... Broussard leads the team in rebounding at 8.5 boards per game.
*** Cal State Northridge and Seattle University will be meeting for the fifth time ... The series is tied 2-2.
*** In their last meeting (1/8/11), the Redhawks scored a 65-58 victory over Cal State Northridge in the Emerald City ... Alex Jones (6-8, 215, Senior, Forward, led Seattle University with 29 points (9-for-11 from the floor, 10-for-11 from the free throw line) along with seven rebounds ... Aaron Broussard (6-5, 250, Junior, Forward, Federal Way, Wa) added 12 rebounds and ten points for SU ... CSUN only has nine years of NCAA season experience, three of those seasons by senior Michael Lizarraga ... Only UC Riverside (7 years) have a younger Big West Conference team than Cal State Northridge.

*** The Matadors, thus far, feature one of the top 1-2 scoring combinations in the Big West Conference ... Lenny Daniel (6-8, 205, Senior, Forward, Richmond, Va) is averaging 16.9 ppg (#3 in the BWC) while Rashaun McLemore (6-5, 2-5. Senior, G/F, Richmond, Va) checks in at 15.3 ppg (#6 in the league) ... The combined scoring total of 32.2 ppg by Daniel and McLemore is the highest 1-2 Cal State Northridge scoring combination since the 2000-01 season when Brian Heinle averaged 20.2 ppg and John Burrell checked in at 14.6 ppg.
