Cal State Northridge drops 65-62 decision to visiting UC Irvine

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Willie Galick came off the bench to score 15 points and grab six rebounds but it wasn't enough as Cal State Northridge dropped a 65-62 decision to UC Irvine in a Big West Conference game on Thursday night at The Matadome.
Galick hit 4-of-6 shots along with seven free throws in ten attempts in 33 minutes of play.
Eric Wise led UC Irvine with 14 points and six rebounds.
The game was close from start to finish. The Matadors biggest lead in the first half was four points, 7-3, at the 15:55 mark. UCI's biggest lead was six points, 26-20, at the 4:05 mark. The game was tied six times in the first half.
At the break, the Anteaters led 33-30.
In all, the game was tied 13 times.
With 2:13 left in the game, a three-pointer by Derrick Strings gave the visitors from Orange County a 62-59 lead. A Darren Moore free throw with 1:43 remaining gave UCI a 63-59 advantage.
Then Kenny Daniels hit a three-pointer at 1:34 to cut the UCI margin to one point, 63-62, with 1:34 remaining.
Then with six seconds remaining, Moore hit two free throws to make it 65-62.
A missed three-point jumper by the Matadors fell short with one second to play as UCI walked away with the win.
Cal State Northridge is now 4-10 overall and 0-3 in the Big West Conference. UC Irvine is 8-7 overall and 2-1 in league play.
Cal State Northridge returns to action on Monday, January 11, when the Matadors hosts Seattle University in a non-league game.
The Redbirds are fresh off a 99-48 victory at Oregon State. Center Charles Garcia Jr,. leads the Seattle attack averaging 22.6 points (ninth in the nation) and 8.7 rebounds per game. Game time is 8:00 p.m.
