CSUN Opens Big West Season With 89-77 Victory over UC Davis

 Cal State Northridge hit a season-high 62 percent (31-for-50) from the floor and sharpened its free throw expertise with a 22-for-23 effort to post an 89-77 victory over UC Davis in the Big West Conference season opener for both teams on Thursday at the Matadome.

Stephen Maxwell scored a team-high 26 points while Josh Greene added 22 points to raise the Matador's season record to 9-7 overall. CSUN is 1-0 in the conference.

UC Davis, led by 25 points from Corey Hawkins, paced the UC Davis attack. The Aggies fell to 5-11 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

UCD took a 16-15 lead at the 10:36 mark of the first half, but the Matadors took charge with a 12-2 run that gave the home team a 27-18 lead at the 6:52 mark.

A 39-31 halftime score erupted into an 18-point lead (53-35) three minutes into the second half. UC Davis got as close as 72-67 with 5:12 to play, but a 13-4 CSUN run gave the Matadors an 87-73 lead with 40 seconds to play.

CSUN hit .956 (22-for-23) from the free throw line, second-best in school history. Both teams combined to hit 37-of-39 free throws.

The victory was CSUN's home win in a Big West home season opener since a 70-59 victory over Pacific in the 2001-02 campaign.

Cal State Northridge hosts Hawai'i on Saturday at 7:00 pm.
