Corpus Christi, Texas - Stephen Maxwell's slam dunk with 48 seconds to play lifted Cal State Northridge to a 67-66 victory over Texas A&M on Friday night at the Dugan Wellness Center.
Maxwell's winning score was the result of a sharp pass from guard Josh Greene, who spotted Maxwell under the basket.
Maxwell ended the game with eleven points (4-for-4 from the field). Three other Matador players scored in double figures. Greene and Stephan Hicks each scored 18 points while Aaron Parks continued his excellent play off the bench with 12 points. Parks led CSUN rebounders with six rebounds. Hicks added five boards.
After Maxwell's basket gave the Matadors a 67-66 lead, the game eventually came down to a final possession for the Islanders. With 49 seconds left on the clock, Rashawn Thomas missed a jumper for Texas A&M - Corpus Christi. Parks rebounded the ball.
CSUN called a timeout with 42 seconds remaining. Twenty seconds later, Parks drove to the basket but the layup just fell off the rim and the rebound fell to John Jordan, who led Islander scorers with 18 points and eight rebounds.
After Texas A&M - Corpus Christi called a timeout to setup one last shot with 16 seconds on the clock. However, a Jordan jumper missed its mark with no time on the clock. Greene grabbed the errant shot and the Matadors raced off the clock with a one-point victory.
CSUN's biggest lead of the game, 29-22, with 5:21 remaining in the first half.
The Matadors led at halftime, 36-33.
Cal State Northridge shot .523 (23-for-44) from the floor.
The difference in the game was free throws. The Matadors hit 16-for-20 from the charity stripe, while Texas A&M - Corpus Christi hit one less free throw (15-for-20).
Final score - Cal State Northrigde 67, Texas A&M 66
CSUN raised its record to 6-5. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi dropped its seventh straight game to fall to 3-9.
