Matador Minute with Baseball Head Coach Matt Curtis

The team is right around the halfway mark of the season and is starting Big West play with UC Irvine, what are your thoughts going into the conference slate?

"I think we are pretty close to where we thought we would be at this point as far as the type of team that we are. We need to play good defense on a consistent basis and pitch well and get timely hits in order to win more games. I don't think we have achieved a level that we are capable of yet when it comes to pitching. We are settling into consistency in the lineup. The competition is going to get a lot tougher and LMU was a good test for us because they mirror about four teams in our conference with their talent."

How do you feel the production from the younger guys on the roster is impacting the team?

"It is great to see some of the newer guys coming along and getting opportunities to help out the team. They will continue to get the opportunities when we need situational hitting. Steven Keller has been one of our most consistent hitters so far this year. The younger guys are good for the future of our program but right now we are focused on what we can do this year."

What are you looking to get out of the seniors on the roster in their final Big West year?

"We have senior leadership with Ridge Carpenter in the outfield, Ryan Juarez and Paul Tremlin on the mound late in games and TS Reed, among others. We look to them to pick us up in clutch situations with hitting and to come in late to close out games. We expect tough competition in the Big West and we have guys that can help us get wins."
