NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Even with a daily schedule full of classes, workouts, and practices the student-athletes and coaching staff of the Cal State Northridge realize the importance of paying it forward.
That is why everyone involved with the program is participating in the "Pinch Hit for Haiti" fundraising program in additional to a multitude of other college baseball programs nationwide.
Originally organized by the Elon University baseball team, baseball student-athletes from that school wanted to find a way to help out the residents of Haiti despite being confined to his campus due to preseason workouts.
In conjunction with the Red Cross, student-athletes and coaches from various college baseball teams have pledged to donate at least one dollar to assist the efforts of volunteers and professionals in Haiti who are assisting with the relief and rebuilding efforts.
The 7.0 earthquake in Haiti has had an effect on nearly 3,000,000 people in the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. The capital city of Port-au-Prince was nearly leveled and many people are still missing; estimates have casualties numbering in the tens of thousands.
This is why the members of Matador baseball have been more than willing to help out and spread this opportunity to others.
Every Matador has signed up with the Red Cross and received a unique identification number that was e-mailed to any and every student-athlete, family member, friend and student known.
Those individuals then had an opportunity to donate additional funds in any amount to the Red Cross.
Every NCAA Division-I, II, and III baseball team has been contacted about the "Pinch Hit for Haiti" program; while individual donations may not be grand in scale, when combined with the efforts of every other baseball student-athlete and coach from every school across the nation, the overall amount of funds raised is limitless.
Cal State Northridge is one of four schools from California who are participating in this program, additional donations to the Red Cross can be made in a variety of ways.
If you are a student at Cal State Northridge, and would like to help out with the "Pinch Hit for Haiti" program, stop by Matador Field during any home game this season to inquire about potential donations. You can donate to the Haiti Relief and Development fund at www.redcross.org or donate $10 via your mobile phone by texting "Haiti" to 90999.
