NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - With the start of the regular season just two weeks away, the Cal State Northridge baseball team will host the Matador baseball alumni in an Alumni Day scrimmage on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 1 p.m. at Matador Field. The annual event, which has featured a homerun derby in the past, will give fans a chance to get their first look at the team.
With a brand new coaching staff, led by head coach Matt Curtis and assistant coaches Tim Leary and Shaun Larkin, the Matadors are looking to improve on a 29-27 overall record and a 9-15 conference mark that saw them finish seventh in the Big West.
Cal State Northridge returns a number of top players from last year's squad. Senior outfielder Ridge Carpenter hit .298 with 59 hits, 10 doubles and 20 stolen bases last season. Senior infielders TS Reed and Justin DeMarco, along with senior pitcher Paul Tremlin are all in their fourth year with the program. DeMarco and Reed accounted for 52 RBI and 110 hits in 2010 as both hit for over a .300 average.
Tremlin struck out 52 batters in 70.0 innings, notching a 7-6 record in 2010. Senior pitcher Ryan Juarez also returns to the mound for the Matadors, where he logged 89.2 innings and recorded 57 strikeouts a year ago.
"We have a strong group of returning guys with experience, and guys that earned an opportunity during fall and January practices will get chances as well," said head coach Matt Curtis. "We've got a nucleus of guys with experience and stability in the field but early on our strength should be on the mound."
Alumni Day gives the players and coaches the opportunity to connect with former Matador greats and enjoy an afternoon playing a friendly game on the diamond.
"We're excited about the alumni game and we're optimistic that we're going to have a really good turnout," Curtis said. "It's important to have a strong alumni group supporting the program and we are going to try to foster that this weekend.
Former players, coaches and staff are encouraged to attend and participate in the day's activities and are asked to arrive early, as alumni batting practice begins at 11:30 a.m.
The Alumni game is open to the public and is free for all in attendance. Parking is available in Lots D6 and E6 as well as in spaces on Lindley Ave. adjacent to the field. A parking pass is required at all times and can be purchased from parking stations in Lots D6 and E6.
First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
