NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge baseball team received 19 votes for an eighth place finish in the 2010 Preseason Coaches Poll as released by the Big West Conference this week.
Head Coach Steve Rousey's Matadors finished in eighth place in 2009 with a 24-32 overall record, going 7-17 in conference action, and look to improve in 2010 as the program welcomes its second consecutive top-40 recruiting class.
Before missing the latter part of the season, D'Anna hit .326 and drove in 32 runs, finishing only behind Pineda who led the team with 44 RBI's.
Also returning to the infield in 2010 are senior Jason Dabbs and junior Justin DeMarco; both finished the 2009 season with 42 hits, near identical RBI totals (Dabbs finished with 19, DeMarco with 18), and solid batting averages (.256 and .246 respectively) that each look to raise throughout the upcoming season.
With TS Reed and his seven stolen bases returning in addition to Todd Eskelin's .333 average, the Matadors will utilize the collective base of talent and experience to help with the transition to Division-I action for the 13 newest members of the program.
With seven first-place votes and 79 overall points, Cal State Fullerton was predicted to finish atop the Big West standings in 2010 as chosen by the nine head coaches in the conference.
UC Irvine received the other two first-place (71 total points) votes and finished in second place behind Fullerton with Cal Poly (60 points), Long Beach State (50 points), and UC Riverside (48 points) rounding out the top half of the poll.
The top three teams in this year's poll were also the three conference representatives in the NCAA post-season tournament in '09.
Finishing ahead of Northridge were UC Santa Barbara (36 points) and Pacific (30) in sixth and seventh place respectively, with UC Davis (12 points) finishing in ninth place.
