May 16, 2009

Box Score

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge Matadors (21-30, 5-15 BWC) dropped the middle game of their three-game series with the Pacific Tigers (19-30, 9-14 BWC) by an 11-0 score as starter David Rowse went the distance for a complete game.

Rowse allowed seven hits and struck out six batters, as he earned his third win of the season and his first complete game.

C.J. Belanger led off the first inning with a triple to the gap in right-center field but in what proved to be a bad omen for the Matadors, he was stranded on third after Rowse retired the next three batters in order.

The Pacific hitters would give Rowse early run support by scoring twice on Northridge starter, Justen Gorski on back-to-back solo home runs.

Third baseman Mike Walker homered on a 3-2 count to deep right field for his fifth home run, then moments later designated hitter Jamie Niley followed with his second home run of the season giving the Tigers an early 2-0 lead.

The Tigers would score four more in the third on four hits, and would add another pair of runs in the fifth inning on three hits.

Down 8-0, the Matadors looked to get on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Justin DeMarco led off the inning with single and two batters later, TS Reed hit a single to right.

Rowse though would show poise on the mound, as he retired Belanger on a grounder and then Jason Dabbs on a strikeout.

The Matadors in the game did add to their Big West leading pick-off total with two more bringing them to 29 on the season. Gorski and reliever Bryan Longpre each earned their second of the season with their pickoffs in the first and third innings respectively.

With the final home game of 2009 set for Sunday afternoon, Cal State Northridge will honor Richard Cates, John Parham, P.J. Rousey, and Bryce Schoening before they conclude their three-game set with Pacific.

Cates on Saturday earned his team-leading 76th hit of the season with a single to left in the fourth inning.

The Matadors will look to win the rubber match Sunday afternoon and win their second straight series when they battle the Pacific Tigers at Matador Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
