Box Score

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Despite another solid bullpen effort for Cal State Northridge, a five-run UC Santa Barbara first did in the Matadors in both sides' Big West Conference opener Friday in Santa Barbara. Billy Swanson, John Parham, and Paul Tremlin starred in the defeat.

The Gauchos got out to a hot start against Northridge starter Jimmy Jolicoeur. The junior right-hander got touched up for four extra-base hits in the opening frame that led to five Gaucho scores. The home team wuld add a run in each of the next three frames, running up a 7-0 lead before Northridge got on the board in the fourth.

Northridge narrowed the lead to four in the seventh on a Richard Cates two-run single, and added their fourth run in the seventh when Drew Muren's double down the left field line cashed in a Billy Swanson single. The Gauchos got that run back in the bottom of the frame to open a five run lead which was too much to overcome.

John Parham launched a solo big fly over the right field wall in the ninth to push the deficit back to four and extend his now seven-game hit streak.

Jolicoeur took the loss after posting a final line of eight earned runs on ten hits in just 3.1 innings of work. Paul Tremlin cleaned up the mess admirably, retiring eight straight at one point and surrendering just one run on two hits over 3.1 innings. P.J. Rousey got the Matadors out of the seventh and Ryan Juarez tossed the eighth.

The Matadors return to action Saturday as they continue to search for their first Big West victory of 2008. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
