Matadors Claim Narrow Victory Over LaSalle, 7-5

Feb. 29, 2008

Box Score

John Parham and Ryan Pineda each went 3-for-4, Ryan Juarez tossed 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, and the Matadors defeated LaSalle 7-5 Friday at Matador Field. Northridge moved to 2-2 with the win and developed some much-needed momentum. Edwin Quirarte earned the win with an unblemished ninth.

Jimmy Jolicoeur made his second start of the season and improved dramatically from his first appearance. Jolicoeur was touched up for five runs, but just one of them was earned. He logged four strikeouts and was lifted in favor of Juarez in the sixth.

Northridge accumulated 13 hits over the course of the game, allowing several players to get in on the action. Parham and Pineda each managed three hits, which was a new career-high for Pineda. Drew Muren and Richard Cates also had multiple-hits with two apiece. Seven Matador RBI were spread evenly among seven players.

LaSalle jumped out to the early lead in the first with a two-run frame. The Matadors, however, answered in the third with three of their own to take the advantage. The lead swapped hands twice more before ultimately settling on the Matadors' side in the bottom of the sixth. Northridge added one more in the eighth before Quirarte slammed the door in the ninth.

The day wasn't all positives for the Matadors. Four errors dotted the line score for the home team, one of which was the result of bad luck. Matt Warr was charged in the first after making a diving stop, but a skipped throw was too much for Jowen-James Murray-Thornton to handle at first.

Friday's game is the first of four in this series, with the finale coming on Tuesday. Tomorrow, Phil Hann will take the hill for the Matadors and will be opposed by senior righthander Jamie Cowan. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
