Getting to Know: Baseball Signee Nolan Bumstead
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. –
Cal State Northridge baseball head coach Greg Moore announced a signing class of 10 student-athletes for the 2014-15 season in November. One of those signees is Nolan Bumstead, an infielder from Vauxhall Academy in Canada.
GoMatadors.com sat down with Nolan to get his thoughts about becoming a Matador, life, school and everything in between…..

What can you say about the Cal State Northridge Baseball coaching staff?
The entire staff was very helpful in informing me exactly what to expect with Northridge and made me feel comfortable with my decision. Inevitably I chose Northridge because of the coaches, due to the feel that I got from all of them surrounding everything on and off the field.
What's your first memory of Cal State Northridge?
My first memory of Cal State Northridge was during this past fall when my high school coach mentioned to me to look at a couple certain schools, Northridge being one, as they had interest.
What do you love most about the sport of baseball?
The components of baseball that I love the most have to be the competitiveness and striving to always improve mentally as well as physically. The constant battle within yourself and others to be the best you can always intrigues and pushes me.
If you weren't playing baseball, what sport(s) would you be playing?
I would definitely play hockey as I have played it my entire life. Growing up in a hockey country everybody plays so I fell in love with it at an early age. Even currently in Vauxhall where I go to school I play pickup hockey as much as I can in my free time.
What kinds of things do you like to do away from the field?
Away from the field I like to spend time with my friends and family as well as play different sports recreationally.
When you attend CSUN, what do you intend to major in and why?
I intend to major in engineering, specifically electrical, as it is deeply interests me and I believe I can excel in the program. It also gives me a good chance to find a good job in Canada after my tenure at Northridge.
If professional baseball doesn't work out, what do you aspire to do after college?
If professional baseball never pans out I hope to find a stable job, hopefully in Canada, that provides an adequate lifestyle.
Are you involved in the community? If so, what have you done?
My teammates and I volunteer every week with various youth groups and senior citizen groups. It is all very rewarding as we get just as much of the experience as they do.
What's the best advice you've ever been given and by whom?
My father, with "It's not what happens to you, it's how you deal with it that matters."
Do you have any pre-game superstitions? If so, what are they?
Yes, I always have a pregame stretch, roll out and if I can take some dry hacks in the mirror by myself to clear my mind.
What number have you worn in high school? Does it have any significance to you?
I wore both 5 and 15 in high school, 5 for Brooks Robinson the greatest defensive third baseman of all time, and 15 after Dustin Pedroia.
If you could meet any three people, dead or alive, who would they be?
Dustin Pedroia, Owen Nolan, Joe Thornton. All three are idols of mine growing as they were guys that played each of their respective sports at the highest level with class and dedication.
What is your favorite pre-game meal?
Any kind of pasta, preferably spaghetti.
What is your favorite pre-game music?
My favourite pre-game music has to be country or rock, something that gets me in the right mindset to go to battle.
If you could visit one country you've never been to, what would that be and why?
I would visit England, mainly because of the rich history and sight seeing places, but also because my family originated from there.
Who was your favorite athlete growing up?
My favourite athlete growing up was by far Dustin Pedroia, as he has such an inspirational story which shows hard work can achieve anything.
What is your favorite baseball team?
My favourite baseball team is the Boston Red Sox.
What sporting event would you most like to see the most?
CSUN women's volleyball or soccer, from what I've heard both teams are very good.
What's the most important thing Cal State Northridge fans should know about you?
Women's volleyball or soccer, from what I've heard both teams are very good. As far as what fans should know about myself, I pride myself on being a hard worker in everything that I do and always put the team before myself.
