Getting to Know: Baseball Signee Matt Campbell
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. –
Cal State Northridge baseball head coach Greg Moore announced a signing class of 10 student-athletes for the 2014-15 season in November. One of those signees is Matt Campbell, a right-handed pitcher/first baseman from Simi Valley, Calif.
Matt was selected to the Area Code games this past summer. GoMatadors.com sat down with the big right-hander to get his thoughts about becoming a Matador, life, school and everything in between…..

What was your first impression of Cal State Northridge during recruiting?
My first impression was that the coaching staff was really cooperative and entertaining. I also thought that the coaches were the type of people that always looks out for your best interests.
What can you say about the Cal State Northridge Baseball coaching staff?
Coach Moore and Coach Twohig are the best. Coach Moore is the type of coach I always want because of his energy and his knowledge. Coach Twohig and I have talked a lot about the hitting stand point and we have similar views so I can't wait to work with him.
What's your first memory of Cal State Northridge?
My first memory of Cal State Northridge was when I was little. I remember watching some professionals that came out of CSUN.
What do you love most about the sport of baseball?
I love the adrenaline. The feeling I get when I strike someone out or hit a double in the gap is indescribable. I also love the relationships that are developed because of baseball, with other teammates, coaches, etc.
If you weren't playing baseball, what sport(s) would you be playing?
I would be playing football and basketball.
What kinds of things do you like to do away from the field?
Away from the field, my friends and I hangout, go to the beach, and play some pick up basketball games.
When you attend CSUN, what do you intend to major in?
I intend to major in Sports Management.
If professional baseball doesn't work out, what do you aspire to do after college?
I would like to be an agent for athletes or work with a sporting company or run my own company.
Are you involved in the community? If so, what have you done?
Very much so. I have helped throughout local baseball fields by running the snack bars and I have helped coach the Challenger League which is a league in which special needs players gets a chance to play baseball. I love getting the chance to help others play this game.
What's the best advice you've ever been given and by whom?
"Whatever you do, do it to your highest ability." -My Father
Do you have any pre-game superstitions? If so, what are they?
I eat a bowl of Captain Crunch in the morning and then I plug in my headphones as I get dressed for my game and the song I normally play before the game depends on the season.
What number have you worn in high school? Does it have any significance to you?
I have worn 23. My first number was 16, but that number is retired for my high school so I wear 23 for my dad.
If you could meet any three people, dead or alive, who would they be?
I would like to meet Jackie Robinson, Mariano Rivera, and Dustin Pedrioa.
What is your favorite pre-game meal?
A steak would have to be my ideal pre-game meal!
What is your favorite pre-game music?
Either country or rap.
If you could visit one country you've never been to, what would that be and why?
I would like to visit France because I think French would be a pretty cool language to speak.
Who was your favorite athlete growing up?
No doubt, Kobe Bryant.
What is your favorite baseball team?
The Los Angeles Dodgers.
What sporting event would you most like to see the most?
I'd say baseball or hockey.
What's the most important thing Cal State Northridge fans should know about you?
I will work hard no matter what and I won't stop for anything to get my grades as high as possible and to get the team to Omaha to win the College World Series.
