SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -
Joshua Goossen-Brown and Kyle Attl each hit a home run in the game but the Cal State Northridge Matadors (31-22, 15-8 Big West) fell 6-2 to the No. 27 Cal Poly Mustangs (36-16, 14-9 Big West) on Saturday afternoon at Baggett Stadium. The Matadors fell behind early in the game and could not generate the offense needed to spark a rally against the Mustangs.
Cal Poly scored first, plating two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-0 lead. With runners on second and third and two outs, Nick Torres singled to center field to drive in both runs.
The Matadors got a run back in the top of the fourth thanks to a leadoff home run by Goossen-Brown. On a 3-2 pitch, Goossen-Brown lifted an offering up in the zone over the wall in left field for his second homer of the season.
The Mustangs responded with three runs in the third to extend their lead to 5-1. After a leadoff walk, Elliot Stewart hit a two-run home run to left. Later in the inning, Denver Chavez hit an RBI single to center field.
Northridge drew closer in the fifth inning thanks to a solo home run by Attl. With two outs, he launched a 2-0 pitch over the left field wall for his third home run of the year.
A final run came across in the bottom of the fifth for Cal Poly to set the final score at 6-2. Torres scored on a ground out by Stewart to the left side of the infield.
Michael Coates threw the final 3.2 innings on the mound for CSUN and struck out a career-high six batters in relief. Calvin Copping (5-5) took the loss for the Matadors after allowing six runs in 4.0 innings of work. Matt Imhof (6-3) struck out 12 in 6.1 innings and Michael Holback picked up his second save of the season.
The final game of the series between the two sides is set for Sunday, May 19, at Baggett Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
