NORTHRIDGE, Calif. –
Four opponents that made the NCAA Tournament in 2012, including a home-and-home series with College World Series participant UCLA, highlight the 2013 Cal State Northridge baseball schedule, head coach Matt Curtis announced Thursday. In addition to a Big West Conference series against Cal State Fullerton, the Matadors will square off against the Bruins, Oregon Ducks and San Diego Toreros next season.
"We are excited about the 2013 baseball schedule," said Curtis. "Our plan was to put together a schedule to prepare this group to compete for the Big West Conference championship and to be ready to play in the postseason."
"With four teams that participated in the NCAA Tournament in 2012, and five Pac-12 opponents in addition to the always challenging Big West schedule, we feel like we will be prepared to compete at the highest level in Division I baseball," added Curtis.
The 2013 campaign is scheduled to begin on Friday, Feb. 15 as the Matadors open with a four-game series against the St. Mary's Gaels at Matador Field. Northridge will then play a split midweek series against CSU Bakersfield with each team hosting one game Feb. 19-20.
Northridge will play another split series, this time against USC, between Feb. 22-24 with the first and third games to be played in Los Angeles. The Matadors and Trojans have not met since the 2009 season.
Following the series with USC the Matadors will embark on their longest road trip of the season, traveling to Washington State for four games (2/28 – 3/3), Oregon for a midweek series (3/4-5) and Sacramento State (3/8-10). Northridge will return home for one game against UCLA on March 12.
A Tuesday game against CSU Bakersfield at home on March 19 will be followed by a four-game series against Utah Valley University at Matador Field from March 22-24. CSUN will also take on the University of San Diego (3/26) before opening the Big West Conference season on the road against Long Beach State (3/28-30).
Northridge will then start the month of April at home against Loyola Marymount on Tuesday, Apr. 2 before another conference series against UC Riverside (4/5-7). The Matadors will end their brief homestand against Washington on Monday, Apr. 8 before Big West series at UC Irvine (4/12-14) and Hawai'I (4/19-21) and a single game at LMU (4/23).
CSUN will host Pacific in Big West play for the final conference series against the Tigers from April 26-28 before another five-game trip at San Diego (4/30), UC Davis (5/3-5) and UCLA (5/7). The Matadors will round out the 2013 season with a home series against UC Santa Barbara (5/10-12), a trip to Cal Poly (5/17-19) and a matchup against conference power Cal State Fullerton on the final weekend (5/23-25).
