RIVERSIDE, Calif. -
Adam Barry hit a three-run home run in the first inning and Cal Vogelsang drove in Ryan Raslowsky in the 10th as the Cal State Northridge Matadors (19-22, 6-7 Big West) defeated the UC Riverside Highlanders (15-25, 4-9 Big West) 8-7 on Friday night at the Riverside Sports Complex.
With the victory, the Matadors moved to 4-1 in extra-inning games, including a 3-0 mark against Big West Conference opposition.
Barry helped the Matadors jump out to an early 3-0 lead after Nathan Ring and Vogelsang drew walks to open the game. On a 3-1 pitch, Barry smacked a high pitch off of the scoreboard in right center field for his second home run of the season.
The Highlanders were able to answer the call in the bottom of the first, however, by scoring three runs to tie the game. With the bases loaded and one out, Clayton Prestridge hit a two-run double to left field and another run scored in the inning on an RBI ground out by Kyle Boudreau.
Northridge retook the lead in the top half of the third, plating two runs against UCR starter Eddie Orozco. Barry and Miles Williams hit back-to-back singles to start the charge before Barry scored on an RBI single by Marty Bowen. Williams came around on a fielder's choice as a throw to second base by the shortstop went into the outfield.
The Matadors kept the lead through the fourth and fifth by turning inning-ending double plays but UC Riverside scored once in the sixth to trim the margin to 5-4 as Boudreau hit a home run over the right field fence with one out.
Northridge again led by three runs after scoring a pair in the top of the eighth as Vogelsang collected an RBI on a fielder's choice that scored Raslowsky. Barry then added his fourth RBI of the evening with a groundout that scored Ring from third.
The Matadors could not close out the game in the ninth, though, as the Highlanders pushed across three runs to send the game to extra innings. With one out, Phil Holinsworth hit and RBI single and Vince Gonzalez hit a two-run double to tie the game.
Northridge rebounded in the 10th and scored the eventual winning run after Raslowsky singled to open the frame. Raslowsky (three singles, two walks) reached base in all five plate appearances for the Matadors.
Ring put down a sacrifice bunt to move Raslowsky into scoring position and Vogelsang doubled down the right field line to give Northridge the 8-7 lead. Harley Holt relieved Louis Cohen in the bottom of the 10th and struck out the two batters he faced with two runners on to close out the victory.
Cohen (6-2) was credited with the win after 3.2 innings in relief of Alex Muren, who went 5.2 innings with three strikeouts. Zach Varela (0-1) allowed the 10th-inning run and took the loss for UC Riverside while Holt earned his third save of the season for CSUN.
Barry finished the day 2-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBIs while Vogelsang drove in two runs and scored another.
The Matadors and Highlanders will continue the Big West series with a game on Saturday night at the Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will feature radio and live stats coverage.
