FULLERTON, Calif. -
Freshman left hander Jerry Keel scattered nine hits and did not allow a run after the first inning as the Cal State Northridge Matadors (12-15, 1-2 Big West) beat the No. 13 Cal State Fullerton Titans (17-10, 2-1 Big West) 5-1 on Sunday afternoon at Goodwin Field. Sophomore Miles Williams hit a two-run home run to cap off a four-run rally with two outs in the third to pace the Matadors.
The Titans were able to score first in the game after Richy Pedroza led off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Michael Lorenzen followed with an RBI single to center field to plate the lone run for Cal State Fullerton.
Northridge rallied to score four times in the top of the third, providing the necessary offense for Keel the rest of the way. With one out, Matthew Moreno singled to left field and moved up to second on a ground out.
With two outs in the frame, the Matadors' bats came alive as Cal Vogelsang singled home Moreno and scored on an RBI double down the left field line by Adam Barry. Williams then came through with a two-run blast on the first pitch over the left field wall for his fourth home run of the season to put Northridge ahead 4-1.
Keel was able to keep the Fullerton hitters off balance all afternoon and forced the Titans to strand seven runners on base in the game. Keel struck out three hitters and walked two while also fielding four ground balls on the mound to help his own cause.
The Titans had a chance to bring the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the eighth as Fullerton had a pair of runners on with one out. Keel was able to get Lorenzen to fly out and induced a ground ball from Carlos Lopez to end the inning.
Vogelsang, Williams and Moreno each had two hits for the Matadors and five different Northridge players scored a run in the contest. Vogelsang now has a hit in 11 consecutive games, a team high.
Cal State Northridge will return to action with a non-conference game against Loyola Marymount on Tuesday, Apr. 3 at Matador Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
