Cal State Northridge women's soccer senior Melissa Fernandez had a goal and an assist in the Matadors' 2-0 victory over Hawai'i on Sept, 30, 2012. Fernandez recorded the first three-point performance by a Matador this season and increased her season total to a team-high eight points.
Fernandez set up the first goal of the game, recovering a loose ball in the 18-yard box and firing a shot that the Rainbow Wahine were able to clear off the goal line. The rebound fell to the feet of fellow senior Nicole Cruz, who buried it into the open netting for what would become the game-winning goal.
In the second half Fernandez posted her second goal of the season and seventh of her career by cleaning up a rebound off the foot of Brittanie Sakajian. Fernandez now has 28 career points, tying her for eighth in school history. She is also now the school's all-time leader in career shots, having posted 135 through three-plus seasons.
