Sophomore forward Edwin Rivas helped the Cal State Northridge men's soccer program clinch the Big West Conference's South Division with a 2-1 win at UC Riverside on October 27. Rivas turned in the first two-goal performance of his career as the Matadors guaranteed themselves a home match in the Big West Tournament Semifinals.
Rivas scored his first of two goals in the 49th minute after receiving a pass on the right side. He took a few dribbles toward the center of the field and curled in a shot from outside of the box to put CSUN ahead 1-0.
Rivas added his second of the match in the 67th minute on a counter attack to score what would prove to be the game-winning goal. A long run up the middle by David Turcios resulted in a through ball to Rivas on the left side. Rivas then deked the oncoming goalkeeper and slotted the ball into the open net for the goal. Rivas now has eight goals, three assists and 19 points this season.
