The Cal State Northridge Matadors will play their final three-game series of the regular season this week when the No. 3 Cal State Fullerton Titans come to town on Thursday, May 23. The Titans wrapped up their fourth consecutive Big West Conference title last weekend and will participate in a postseason regional. The Matadors are currently tied for second in the conference and looking to take a series from the Titans to end the season.

Dr. Brandon E. Martin, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, and Dr. Tina Kiesler, Faculty Athletic Representative, presented each of the department's graduating student-athletes with a commemorative sash and a red rose during the event.

Needing a victory to keep pace at the top of the Big West Conference, the Cal State Northridge Matadors (31-23, 15-9 Big West) were defeated 7-2 by the No. 27 Cal Poly Mustangs (37-16, 15-9 Big West) on Sunday afternoon at Baggett Stadium. A late-inning run for the Matadors was unable to spark a rally and the Mustangs scored two runs in the eighth to seal the game.

Matador Women's Soccer Releases 2013 Schedule
Looking to defend their 2012 Big West Conference Championship, the Cal State Northridge women’s soccer team and head coach Keith West have announced the Matadors’ 2013 schedule. CSUN will play a total of 19 contests in the fall of 2013 and Northridge will host a total of 10 matches at Matador Soccer Field.

Joshua Goossen-Brown and Kyle Attl each hit a home run in the game but the Cal State Northridge Matadors (31-22, 15-8 Big West) fell 6-2 to the No. 27 Cal Poly Mustangs (36-16, 14-9 Big West) on Saturday afternoon at Baggett Stadium. The Matadors fell behind early in the game and could not generate the offense needed to spark a rally against the Mustangs.

Despite recording nine hits, the Cal State Northridge Matadors (31-21, 15-7 Big West) were defeated 5-1 by the No. 27 Cal Poly Mustangs (35-16, 13-9 Big West) on Friday night at Baggett Stadium. Eight different Matadors recorded a hit and the pitching staff combined for 11 strikeouts but a big inning early spelled the difference in the game.

Seniors Mikayla Thielges and Shelly Tait and freshman Maylynn Mitchell were named to the 2013 All-Big West Conference Softball Team per a vote of the conference's head coaches, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon. Thielges earned her second career All-Big West award, placing on the second team. Tait and Mitchell were recognized for the first time and received honorable mention awards.

Chester Pak hit the first two home runs of his collegiate career and John Salas threw a complete game as the Cal State Northridge Matadors (31-20, 15-6 Big West) beat the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (27-21, 12-9 Big West) 7-1 on Mother's Day at Matador Field. Three errors proved too costly for Cal State Northridge as the Matadors (30-20, 14-6 Big West) dropped the second game of its series with the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (27-20, 12-8 Big West) 6-2 on Saturday afternoon at Matador Field. Northridge had the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the eighth but were unable to push runs across, losing its second straight game for the first time since March 29-30 at Long Beach State.

The Cal State Northridge softball team (25-30, 11-12 Big West) lost 4-0 and won 2-1 in a Big West Conference doubleheader with Cal State Fullerton Friday evening at Anderson Family Field. After dropping a 4-0 decision, senior Mia Pagano carried a one-hit shutout into the bottom of the seventh in game two before CSUN ultimately prevailed 2-1.

Despite another strong outing by Jerry Keel, the Cal State Northridge Matadors (30-19, 14-5 Big West) fell late in a 6-1 loss to the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (26-20, 11-8 Big West) on Friday afternoon at Matador Field. Keel pitched 8.0 scoreless innings and Nathan Ring launched a solo home run in the ninth but the Gauchos scored six runs in the final inning for the victory.

Race for Big West Title Heats Up This Week as CSUN Hosts UCSB
Nine games remain in the Big West Conference season. Cal State Northridge is currently on an eight-game winning streak, the team’s longest since 2002, and the Matadors have won their last nine conference games dating back to April 19. The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos visit Matador Field this weekend for three games with both side looking for an important series victory to improve their postseason resumes. Fans are encouraged to get to the field early this weekend to find parking close to the ballpark as the Big West Track and Field Championships are also being held on campus on Friday and Saturday.

After jumping out to an early lead, the Cal State Northridge Matadors (30-18) clamped down defensively to upset the No. 8 UCLA Bruins (31-14) 4-1 on Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium. CSUN Meets Utah Valley University for First Time in Program History
The Cal State Northridge Matadors welcome the Utah Valley University Wolverines to Matador Field for a four-game series this weekend. The Matadors and Wolverines have not previously met on the diamond. The two sides will open the series on Friday afternoon and will play a scheduled doubleheader on Saturday. The first game of the twin-billing is set to last seven inning while the second game will be a regulation nine-inning contest. On the heels of a season-long 10-game road trip, the Cal State Northridge Matadors finally return home to Matador Field this week. CSUN Softball Hosts Northern Illinois, LMU, Seattle at Matador Diamond
The Cal State Northridge softball team (10-16) hosts Northern Illinois in a doubleheader at Matador Diamond on Tuesday, Mar. 12 with the first game starting at 1 p.m. Then on Saturday, Mar. 16 and Sunday, Mar. 17, CSUN welcomes Seattle and LMU to the San Fernando Valley for three games each day starting at 9:30 a.m. The Matadors will face both the Redhawks and Lions Saturday and Sunday. Cal State Northridge senior Mia Pagano was named the Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday. Originally from Temecula, Calif., Pagano tossed a complete game in the Matadors' historic victory over UCLA and then added a 6+ innings of relief work with seven strikeouts in a win against CSU Bakersfield.

Ashlee Guay Named to All-Big West Second Team
Cal State Northridge sophomore Ashlee Guay was named to the All-Big West Second Team as voted upon by the league's coaches, the conference office announced Monday. A guard from San Diego, Calif., Guay enters the Big West Tournament averaging 13.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals per contest.

Trailing by two runs in the top of the eighth inning, the Cal State Northridge Matadors (6-9) rattled off five straight hits and eventually scored four times to defeat the Sacramento State Hornets (8-6) 5-3 on Saturday afternoon at John Smith Field. Matadors Edged By Trojans 6-5 In 10 Innings
Despite rallying back from a 4-0 deficit to force extra innings, the Cal State Northridge Matadors (4-2) could not complete a second straight comeback and fell 6-5 to the University of Southern California Trojans (3-3) in 10 innings on Saturday afternoon at Matador Field. Northridge scored four runs in the seventh to tie the game and used a squeeze bunt in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings.

The Cal State Northridge Matadors will play their first road game of the season this week when they split a series with the USC Trojans. The Matadors were slated to play a home-and-home series with CSU Bakersfield last week but both games were postponed due to weather. The Matadors are looking to keep the momentum they built with a series win over Saint Mary’s on Opening Weekend. Northride and USC will open the series on Friday night at Dedeaux Field in Los Angeles and will play Saturday’s game at Matador Field in Northridge. Associate Head Coach Yossi Raz Takes Top Job at Cal Poly Pomona
After putting together one of the most storied playing and coaching careers at Cal State Northridge over the last 12 seasons, men’s soccer associate head coach Yossi Raz has accepted the head coaching role at Cal Poly Pomona. Raz, in his eighth season as an assistant to head coach Terry Davila, helped the Matadors compile a 15-7 record and the program’s first Big West Conference Tournament Championship in 2012.

The Cal State Northridge Matadors open up their 54th season of competition when they host the Saint Mary’s Gaels in a four-game series this weekend. Northridge, coming off of a year that saw them tie for sixth in the Big West Conference, will look to start the 2013 campaign on the right foot. The Matadors are 32-20-2 all-time on Opening Day and have not lost a home opener since 2008. Matadors Start 2013 Season at ASU’s Kajikawa Classic
The Cal State Northridge softball team opens its 2013 season with five games at the Arizona State Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. At the event, CSUN will face San Jose State and the host No. 4 Sun Devils (Feb. 8), No. 14 Florida and No. 3 California (Feb. 9) and Western Michigan (Feb. 10). Select contests will feature live stats available at GoMatadors.com and statistics and results will also be made available on the CSUN athletic department’s official Twitter account (@GoMatadors). Four of the Matadors’ five games will be played at the Tempe Sports Complex while CSUN’s game with Arizona State will be played on the Sun Devils’ campus at Farrington Stadium.

The top three scorers in the Big West Conference will be on display when Cal State Northridge hosts rival Cal State Fullerton in a league contest on Saturday, January 5, at 7:05 pm at The Matadome. CSF’s Kwame Vaughn and D.J. Seeley are 1-2 in scoring at 19.5 ppg and 18.7 ppg, respectively. CSUN’s Stephan Hicks is third in the conference in scoring at 18.1 ppg

Yuval Barak Named to NSCAA Scholar All-West Region Team
Yet another Cal State Northridge soccer player earned postseason recognition this season, as senior defender Yuval Barak was named to the Scholar All-West Region Team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, the NSCAA recently announced. Barak, who joined teammate Joe Franco on the Scholar All-West Team, finished his career with a 3.77 GPA as a Kinesiology major to earn the honor.

In keeping with the spirit of the holiday season, over 380 student-athletes at Cal State Northridge recently participated in their annual adopt-a-family event. Led by the Matadors’ Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), in collaboration with the M.E.N.D. Terry Davila Named NSCAA Division I Far West Region Coach of the Year
After a 15-7 season in which the Cal State Northridge Matadors matched the program’s Division I record for wins, won the Big West Conference and reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005, head coach Terry Davila was named the NSCAA Division I Far West Region Coach of the Year on Tuesday night. Davila, in his 14th year with the Matadors, joins former CSUN head coach Marwan Ass’ad as a regional coach of the year and is the only Northridge coach to win the honor at the Division I level.

Former Cal State Northridge men’s soccer goalkeeper Manabu Kaji is the latest alumni to make a mark in his professional soccer career, helping the Anaheim Bolts of the Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL) to a pair of early season wins. In the opening game of the 2012 Cal State Northridge Red/Black World Series, senior outfielder Cal Vogelsang helped lead Team Black to a narrow 3-2 victory over Team Red on Friday afternoon at Matador Field. Matadors' Defense Stifles Eagles in 66-44 Victory
The Cal State Northridge women's basketball team (2-0) defeated Eastern Washington 66-44 Thursday evening in a non-conference game at The Matadome. Sophomore Camille Mahlknecht produced her first career double-double (22 points and 13 rebounds) and Ashlee Guay scored all 14 points in the second half as the Matadors held the Eagles to 25.5 percent shooting for the contest.

No. 25 CSUN Drops 2-1 Heartbreaker to San Diego in NCAA Tournament First Round
On a rain-soaked pitch in the NCAA Tournament First Round, the No. 25 Cal State Northridge Matadors (15-7) lost a double-overtime heartbreaker 2-1 to the San Diego Toreros (12-8) on Thursday night at Matador Soccer Field. After scoring the match's first goal, Northridge conceded the equalizer in the 89th minute and the winner in double overtime to see its majestic season come to a close.

No. 25 Northridge Hosts San Diego in NCAA Tournament First Round
The No. 25 Cal State Northridge Matadors (15-6) return home to open up NCAA Tournament play after winning the 2012 Big West Conference Tournament last week. The Matadors shutout the Cal Poly Mustangs in the semifinal round before winning the final match 1-0 at UC Davis on November 10. CSUN’s first opponent in the NCAA Tournament will be the University of San Diego. The Toreros (11-8) were winners of the West Coast Conference and earned an automatic bid to the postseason. The Matadors and Toreros will play on Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Matador Soccer Field. The winner of Thursday’s match will travel to UCLA to face the Bruins on Sunday, Nov. 18 at 5 p.m. The last time the Matadors appeared in the NCAA Tournament was in 2005 when the team defeated UC Santa Barbara in the second round in Northridge before falling 1-0 in overtime at New Mexico. CSUN is 1-3-1 all-time in the national tournament.

Lev-Ari Named Disney Soccer/NSCAA Player of the Week

Ashlee Guay Named Big West Conference Player of the Week
Cal State Northridge sophomore guard Ashlee Guay has been named the Big West Conference's Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. In the Matadors' season-opening victory over Portland, Guay led all scorers with 20 points and set a new career high with nine field goals.

Matador Women's Basketball Name Rheina Ale Director of Operations
The Cal State Northridge women’s basketball program has added former San Francisco standout Rheina Ale as the program’s Director of Operations, CSUN head coach Jason Flowers announced. Ale was a four-year starter and three-year team captain for the Dons and will assist with academics, video and other administrative duties with the Matadors.
