Greg Moore, recently named by Baseball America as one of the Top 10 Assistant Coaches in College Baseball, has been hired as the head coach at Cal State Northridge, CSUN Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Brandon E. Martin announced today. Moore spent the past three seasons as the associate head coach at the University of San Francisco, where he oversaw pitching, admissions, community service and summer placement.

"It's an exciting time at Cal State Northridge, the leadership is so impressive. I had a chance to meet so many interesting and dynamic people on my visit," said Moore. "I want to bring a passion to improve everyday on and off the field. I want to make the San Fernando Valley proud of its baseball team."

"We are delighted to welcome Greg Moore to the CSUN family. Greg's character, relentless work ethic, and strong baseball acumen set him apart from a competitive pool of candidates," said Dr. Martin. "Given Greg's reputation for skill development, I'm confident he will maximize the talent we currently have in program, particularly with our pitching core."

Moore becomes the ninth head coach in Matador history as the program enters its 55th year of competition in 2013-14.

"My hope is that whether walking into the office, into the classroom or onto the field, the burning question for our staff and players is 'How do we get better today?'" said Moore.

While at USF, Moore coached three first-round draft picks and eight players taken in the first 10 rounds of the MLB Draft. Of the eight players, only one had been previously drafted out of high school and three were walk-ons.

Moore began his collegiate coaching career at USF in 2002 as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Dons. In that role, Moore developed a life skills training program for all incoming student-athletes and maintained the program's alumni outreach efforts. He served in that capacity until 2009, when he took a position as the pitching coach at the University of Washington for one season before heading back to his alma mater.

"Greg has also demonstrated the ability to build support and community interest at USF," added Dr. Martin. "We appreciate his emphasis on outreach and feel that baseball enthusiasts in the greater San Fernando Valley will respond positively to his passion."

During the fall semester in his lone season at UW (2009), the Huskies had the highest GPA improvement of any program in the department.

In addition, Moore helped USF achieve numerous accomplishments both on the field and off. Before his arrival, the Dons had never competed in an NCAA Regional. During his tenure, USF reached the NCAA Tournament three times, including twice in the past three seasons.

Three members of his pitching staff were drafted in 2012 and under his leadership the team achieved a program best 3.24 GPA last fall. In 2005, the USF pitching staff had a conference-best 2.86 ERA and an opponent batting average of .234.

Moore played collegiate baseball for the University of San Francisco and was named to the West Coast Conference All-Academic Team in 2001. As a player, he won the team's "Most Inspirational" award in back-to-back seasons and the award now bears his name.

"I am grateful to President Harrison and Dr. Martin. I believe that CSUN is already a special place and I hope that I can add to the team that is CSUN Athletics," concluded Moore.

Moore earned his bachelor's degree in education and completed his master's in sports and fitness management at USF in 2001. He and his wife, Taryn, were married in August of 2009.
