This week I had the pleasure of addressing our Corporate Sponsors and our entire Athletics Department at our yearly Welcome Back Staff Meeting. My message was simple: while we made strides in raising our academic and athletic profile, we cannot be complacent with our recent success. I charged our coaches and staff members to use the tools and resources we have available to us to achieve comprehensive excellence. WE MUST Make a daily decision to compete! there are no shortcuts to winning championships. I want to share with you a portion of that message below, called “Put On Your Hard Hat.”

Additionally, I want to congratulate Casey Hinger, from our women’s volleyball team, and Sagi Lev-Ari of men’s soccer for being named candidates for the Senior CLASS Award. This award is a special recognition that exemplifies what it means to be a complete student-athlete. The winner of the award, which is given to one student-athlete per sport across the nation, puts emphasis on one’s character, community service, classroom achievements and excellence in competition. We are extremely proud of Casey and Sagi and hope to see them in contention for this award as the season advances.

Tomorrow night before our men’s soccer match (9/12/14) we will host a free Fan Fair outside of Matador Soccer Field. I want to invite you to come out and enjoy music and games, meet different groups on campus and get FIRED UP before the start of the match. Come out and show your Matador Pride.

We are also debuting our brand-new soccer suites, which will give our VIPs an unparalleled experience at our men’s soccer matches. I am looking forward to watching the Matadors take on New Mexico and I am sure our VIPs are too! I will post photos throughout the evening of the Fan Fair and soccer suites to share with you on my Twitter account, @CSUNAD.

Go Matadors!

Matadors Fans:

It’s our time to Rise!

As we enter the 2014-15 competitive season, I want the entire Matador Nation to know that our student-athletes, coaches, and staff are FIRED UP for another epic year in CSUN Athletics. We are focus and determined to be one of the top programs in the Big West Conference.

Last season at our annual Varsity N Academic Athletics Honor Roll event, 72 of our student-athletes received recognition for earning at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA. Our women’s basketball and volleyball programs won Big West Championships, while our men’s basketball, men’s soccer and women’s water polo teams each made an appearance in the Big West Tournament Final. Our women’s golf program finished second in the conference and was represented at the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2004. Our women’s 4x100-meter relay team finished 10th at the NCAA Championships after posting the second-fastest time in school history. Our women’s water polo program was ranked as high as #7 in 2014, the highest ever for the team.

Our 2014 fall sports got underway last week, highlighted by our women’s volleyball team sweeping the UNLV Invitational during first weekend of the season. We look forward to Coach Stork and his team making another run at the NCAA Tournament.

Recently, I had a chance to sit down with Ghizal Hasan, our infamous men’s basketball radio announcer, to discuss the upcoming year in CSUN Athletics. I want to share the following excerpts with you below:

This past summer, CSUN Athletics announced the “Rise of the Matadors,” a pride campaign that ushered in a new visual identity for the Matadors. Our new identity pays tribute to the rich tradition and culture at CSUN. Our new image represents more than a logo or a brand, it represents expectations, memories, relationships and the pride that we all have in being Matadors.

Finally, I’m proud to announce that Octavio Cortes, an Accounting major on campus, will serve as the Associated Students Chair of Athletics this year. Octavio will work closely with our department on student cultivation and engagement within Athletics. Octavio will also assist with coordinating two of our fall signature events—the Second Annual AD 3vs.3 Tournament and Matador Madness. We look forward to Octavio’s contributions this season!

Our first home event of the 2014-15 year is this Friday, Sept. 5, as our women’s soccer team takes on Gonzaga at 7 p.m. at Matador Soccer Field. I hope to see you there.

Go Matadors!
