The Week Ahead ...

The Week Ahead ...
The Week Ahead ...
Finals are over and now it's time to get back to business on the basketball court ... Bob Vazquez, Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations, offers his weekly insights on the accomplishments of the teams, coaches, and student-athletes who compete for Cal State Northridge ... The weekly report includes upcoming key games, and a report on what other activities are happening in the Matador Athletic Department ... For more information on Matador Athletics, go to www.gomatadors.com

Christmas Cheer ...
The Cal State Northridge Student Athletic Advisory Council (SAAC) is in the Christmas spirit by sponsoring an adopt-a-family through the MEND (Meeting Every Need with Dignity) organization ... This year, Matador student-athletes have raised more than $1,000 to help a mother and her six children have a wonderful Christmas ... Holiday gifts include food, clothes and toys ... This is genuinely a thoughtful endeavor by Matador student-athletes as they have contributed their own time and money to make Christmas a joyous occasion for someone less fortunate ... Congratulations to all CSUN student-athletes for a job well done and making a needy family's Christmas one to remember.

Holiday Hoops ...
Tired of trying to find a parking spot at the mall where none exists ... Tired of grumpy people standing in long lines at Macy's to buy last minute Christmas gifts ... Tired of figuring out what to buy your favorite person, or just plain tired of hearing the same Christmas music on the radio instead of some good old fashion rock n' roll ... How about a men's or women's basketball game at The Matadome ... Both the men's and women's basketball teams return to holiday action this week ... The price is right and no grumpy people will be allowed in ... On Wednesday (Dec. 19, 7:00 p.m.), the Matador women host Cal State Bakersfield on Youth Night ... There will be FREE general admission for all youth, 12-and-under ... On the following evening, the Matador men (6-2) hosts Vanguard College in a 7:05 p.m. game ... The event is billed as 2-for-1 Admission Night which simply means buy one ticket and get one FREE in general admission ... Even Santa might be interested in attending both games.

Matador Minute...
Cal State Northridge graduates are everywhere ... At the recent CSUN-Gonzaga men's basketball game in Spokane, one of the Matador rooters was Irv Zakheim, who was an outstanding baseball player on the Matadors NCAA championship team in 1970 ... Zakheim is the highly successful president of Zak Designs, a Spokane-based supplier of kids' lunch kits, dinnerware, travelware, and tabletop and kitchen products ... Founded in 1976, the company has offices in nine countries around the world ... Zakheim is also a major supporter of Gonzaga athletics and helped generate money for the school's beautiful new basketball arena and baseball stadium ... Zakheim, who is involved in several community activities in the Spokane area, helped the Matadors to the NCAA title (41-21) in 1970 as an all-league infielder under then head coach Bob Hiegert ... Zakheim later played professional baseball in the Chicago White Sox organization ... As a side note, Hiegert is now the commissioner of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) ... December birthday wishes to several members of the CSUN men's and women's basketball team - Tremaine Townsend (Dec. 11), Tony Osunsanmi (Dec. 12) and Crystian Trice (Dec. 23).
