Fifteen Matadors Named to Fall Big West All-Academic Team
Fifteen Matadors have been named to the Fall Big West All-Academic Team as announced by the conference on Wednesday. Women's volleyball garnered the most honors with seven players earning All-Academic accolades. Four student-athletes from women's cross country, three from women's soccer and one from men's soccer round out the list.
To be eligible for the All-Academic Team, student-athletes have to maintain a 3.2 cumulative grade point average, complete one full academic year at Northridge prior to the season for which the award is being received (at least a sophomore academically) and compete in at least 50 percent of their team's contests.
Representing women's volleyball were senior Hilary Brinkman (Camarillo, CA/Cinema and Television Arts) and sophomores Harmony Burdine (Pico Rivera, CA/Undecided), Kelley Hanson (Moorpark, CA/Kinesiology), Amy Hultner (Garden Grove, CA/Kinesiology), Val Kepler (Simi Valley, CA/Business), Jenn Probert (Ventura, CA/Business) and Kayla Wright (Murrieta, CA/Marketing).
Earning honors from the women's cross country squad were senior Julia Flores (Reseda, CA/Engineering), juniors Diana Rosete (Costa Mesa, CA/Sociology) and Caren Sather-Sperry (Simi Valley, CA/Kinesiology) and sophomore Sandra Velarde (San Fernando, CA/Spanish).
Women's soccer honorees included senior Devon Nizich (San Pedro, CA/Family and Consumer Sciences) and juniors Susie Mischenko (Arcadia, CA/Kinesiology) and Mary Ortega (Saugus, CA/Liberal Studies).
Men's soccer was represented by sophomore Kevin Guppy (Chino Hills, CA/Sociology).
Along with earning All-Academic honors, four Matadors, Burdine, Hanson, Mischenko and Guppy, received All-Big West accolades for their performances in their respective sports.
