The Week Ahead ...
Fierce rivals on the court, great friends off the court ... Bob Vazquez, Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations, offers his weekly insights on the accomplishments of the teams, coaches, and student-athletes who compete for Cal State Northridge.

Northridge Notes ...
Dallas Rutherford is a freshman guard at Cal State Northridge ... Jrue Holiday is a freshman guard at UCLA ... Although both players were opponents on the basketball court during Sunday night's game between the Matadors and the Bruins, both were close teammates at Campbell Hall High School as they both helped lead their school to great success ... Rutherford and Holiday complemented each other in the backcourt and enjoyed outstanding prep careers at Campbell Hall in helping lead their team to a record of 64-5 during their junior and senior seasons ... Both players helped the Vikings to back-to-back state and CIF championships ... As seniors, Rutherford averaged 19.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 2.4 steals per game while Holiday checked in at 25.9 points, 11.2 rebounds, 6.9 assists and 4.8 steals per game ... While Rutherford has a sister, Kayla, playing on the Matador women's basketball team, Holiday has a brother who is playing at the University of Washington ... In the Cal State Northridge basketball media guide, Rutherford lists Holiday as his best friend from another team ... It hasn't hit the New York Times best sellers list but maybe a literary career is looming, but Steve Grech, CSUN's Director of Sports Medicine/Head Athletic Trainer, has co-authored an article with Aimie Kachingwe (CSUN's team physical therapist) on sports hernias in the December edition of JOSPT (Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy) ... The medical headline for the article reads "Proposed Algorithm fo the Management of Athletes With Athletic Pubalgia (Sports Hernia): A Case Series ... The Cal State Northridge Cheerleading Squad has qualified to compete at the Universal Cheerleaders Association's College Cheerleading National Championships in Orlando, Florida ... The event will be held Jan. 16-19, 2009, at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex and it will be the first time that CSUN will be competing ... More than 50 universities will be represented, but only three schools from California (CSUN, San Diego State and Sacramento State) ... Top finishers will have their routines aired on ESPN ... The CSUN Cheerleading Squad practices three days a week, participates at numerous Matador athletic events, and at more than 40 campus events throughout the year ... They receive financial support from Associated Students, Inc., but they need more financial help to pay their trip to FLorida ... The cheerleading team has done various fundraisers throughout the year, but more financial help is needed ... If you are interested in making a tax deductible donation, contact Cheerleading Advisor, Erin G. Kiser at 818-677-2683 or mail in a donation to CSUN Athletics/Cheerleading, 18111 Nordhoff Street, Northridge, CA 91330-8301 ... Your help will be greatly appreciated.
