Hall of Fame Hoopla ...
Since 1958 when Cal State Northridge opened its door, Matador teams and student-athletes have enjoyed tremendous success on the field ... Since advancing to the NCAA Division I level in 1991, CSUN has won 33 league championships, and claimed three NCAA individual titles ... Prior to 1991, CSUN competed on the NCAA Division II level, and captured 30 NCAA titles during that time ... The current Cal State Northridge Hall of Fame has 99 members including such notables as sportscaster Dick Enberg, who was an assistant baseball coach at CSUN in the 1960's, current major leaguer Adam Kennedy, former U.S. Olympian track & field gold and silver medalist (400 meter relay-gold, 100 meters-silver, 1984 Olympics) Alice Brown, former PGA professional Rex Caldwell, and some of the all-time great coaches in school history including Pete Accardy (Swimming, 13 NCAA titles) and Gary Torgeson (Softball, four NCAA titles) ... To honor those past great teams and individuals, Matador fans now have the opportunity to nominate their favorite team or student-athlete for inclusion into the CSUN Hall of Fame Class of 2009 ... Those teams and former student-athletes selected by the CSUN Hall of Fame committee will be inducted on March 1, 2009 ... Fast Facts ...
According to UCLA's website, the men's basketball game between the Bruins and Cal State Northridge on Dec. 7 at Pauley Pavilion will be televised on Fox Sports Net Prime Ticket with the game time changed from 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. ... Congratulations to Jeff Campbell (men's head volleyball coach) and his wife, Robin, on the birth of their second child, Anna ... Anna joined the Campbell family on Sept. 29 at 3:30 p.m. ... The nationally-ranked Matador women's water polo team is joining a new league ... In the past, Cal State Northridge has competed in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), but this year, the Big West Conference begins its sponsorship of women's water polo ... Cal State Northridge, Long Beach State, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara and Pacific will comprise the six schools competing for the inaugural championship ... The core group of players who helped Cal State Northridge finish 13th in the nation last season return to the pool in hopes of propelling the Matadors to the top of the Big West in 2009 ... Senior Jessica Coy returns as the team's top scorer after scoring 39 goals last year ... Junior Jillian Stapf returns to the nets as one of the nation's top goalkeepers ... Stapf collected 287 saves in 31 games last year, an average of 9.26 saves per game ... Stapf, who was named an Honorable Mention All-American, has posted 623 career saves in two seasons, second-best in school history and just 138 short of tying the top mark.
