The Week Ahead ...
Cal State Northridge Basketball Operations Director bleeds Matador Red, and Bruin Blue & Gold ... Bob Vazquez, Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations, offers his weekly insights on the accomplishments of the teams, coaches, and student-athletes who compete for Cal State Northridge.
Dodd's Dialogue ...
Ryan Dodd loves the game of basketball .. In fact, Dodd, who is the Cal State Northridge Director of Men's Basketball Operations, aspires to become head coach of a major college program in the future ... In the meantime, Dodd is a valuable staff member of the Matador basketball program that is expected to be favorites in the Big West Conference and advance to the NCAA Tournament ... Dodd was a standout basketball player at Servite High School in Anaheim where he helped lead the Friars to the California state championshp in 1990, and a CIF section championship in 1991 ... But what is really interesting is that Dodd was also an all-state football player (tight end) who was recruited by several Pac-10 schools including UCLA, Arizona State and Washington State ... Dodd landed at UCLA where he played one season (1992) for the Bruins ... Dodd admits he only suited up in two games (San Diego State, USC) during his one season on the UCLA varsity ... Dodd chuckles that his claim to fame in college football was when he congratulated teammate J.J. Stokes on the sidelines after Stokes scored a touchdown against the Trojans (a 38-37 UCLA win), and both appeared on national television for a few seconds ... But Dodd's first love has always been basketball, and he decided to end his football career after the 1992 season to concentrate on playing hoops ... After attending UCLA for two and a half years, Dodd transferred to Cypress College where he played basketball for one season (1995-96) ... But after his experience at Cypress, academics took center stage and Dodd returned to the Bruin campus to obtain his degree in Sociology ...Dodd has a few regrets about foregoing his football career after the `92 season ... Little did he know then that the Bruins would go to the Rose Bowl the following season ... Dodd still follows the fortunes of UCLA football and admits that if he had stayed with football, worked hard in the weight room and gotten better on the field, he could have played and started for the Bruins ... But Dodd remains steadfast about his love of basketball, and his future contributions as a head coach ... Dodd has already gained some coaching experience while at Servite High School in Anaheim, and at St. John Bosco in Bellflower ...Dodd and his wife, Rosario, are expecting their first child in the spring.
Basketball Beat ...
Another college basketball pre-season magazine hits the newstand this week ... Look for Athlon Sports College Basketball Annual to pick the Cal State Northridge men's basketball team to win the Big West championship ... Plans are moving along for the Oct. 25 Matador Basketball "Tipoff" Preview at The Matadome ... Tentative plans call for a reception with fans, boosters, students, faculty, the pep band, cheer squad and Matty the Matador starting at 5:30 p.m. with the coaches and players available for autographs starting around 6:00 p.m. ... At 7:00 p.m., the players and coaches from both squads will be introduced and several drills will be run to get an idea of what to expect during the 2008-09 season ... Admission is FREE!!!
