The Week Ahead at Cal State Northridge ...
We're BACK!!! ... Bob Vazquez, Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations, begins his second season of offering his weekly insights on the accomplishments of the teams, coaches, and student-athletes who compete for Cal State Northridge.

Matador Minute ...
*** Few people will argue that the greatest honor in sport is winning an Olympic gold medal ... Matador women's volleyball head coach Jeff Stork, who helped lead the 1988 United States Olympic men's volleyball team to the gold medal as the team's starting setter, watched with pride the 2008 U.S. Olympic team, ranked fourth in the world, defeat the powerful and top-ranked Brazilian team for the gold medal at the recent Olympics in China ... "Obviously I'm excited for USA Volleyball, and the men's and women's beach volleyball teams that won gold, along with the indoor women's team that won the silver medal. It was a great Olympics for USA Volleyball. I know all the indoor men's players and I am so happy for them. The coaching staff did a terrific job. " ... Another former Olympian is Matador assistant track & field Seilala Sua, who competed at the 2000 Olympics (Sydney, Australia) and the 2004 Olympics (Athens, Greece) for the United States ... Sua, who competed in the discus, watched in amazement as U.S. Olympian Stephanie Brown Trafton upset a highly competitive field to win the Olympic gold medal in the discus ... It was the first gold medal by a U.S. woman in the event since Lillian Copeland in 1932 ... "I think it put American female throwers on the map," said Sua ... "That was an exciting event to watch" ...

*** Check out the new and improved Matador Soccer Field on the CSUN campus ... There is a new $40,000 scoreboard, improved seating, and a much improved concession area ... And both the men's and women's soccer teams are also much improved; an exciting product to watch during the 2008 season ... On the drawing board is a fund raising campaign to provide lights, hopefully in time for the 2009 soccer seasons ...

*** The nationally-ranked Matador men's volleyball team lost a key component to its coaching staff when assistant Jeff Conover resigned to pursue a playing career in beach volleyball ... Conover, along with head coach Jeff Campbell, helped build the Matadors into one of the top collegiate volleyball programs in the country ... CSUN was ranked #1 during a portion of the 2008 campaign ... Conover was an assistant for two seasons and helped the Matadors to a 41-22 record during that time ... Still on the volleyball front, setter Travis Bluemling, who was a four-year starter at setter (2005-08), has moved to the New York City area where he is pursuing a modeling career ... Isaac Kneubuhl, an All-American in 2008, has been invited to train with the U.S. National team but is mulling over an option to play professional volleyball in Europe ...

*** The Matador men's basketball team, expected to be the pre-season favorite in the Big West Conference, is prominently mentioned on the basketball link on ESPN.com ... The article extensively quotes head coach Bobby Braswell ... Although the pre-season national magazines will not hit the newsstand for a couple months, speculation is the Matadors will be favorites in several of those magazines to capture the Big West title for a second straight season ... For those Matador fans awaiting the final 2008-09 men's basketball schedule, there is still one more home game to be filled (Dec. 20 at The Matadome) before the schedule can become official and released ... The early portion of the schedule will need the services of a compass and map ... Following the season opener at home against Cal Lutheran (1/14/08), the Matadors begin a demanding trek to games at Stanford (11/18/08), Cal State Bakersfield (11/21/08), New Mexico (11/24/08), Rider (11/29/08), Draxel (12/1/08) and at UCLA (12/7/08)... The trip will involve more than 4,000 miles ...

*** After a four year absence, the Matador Hall of Fame will enjoy a revival ... Plans for this year include induction of past great CSUN teams and deserving former Matador student-athletes who will be honored at the Cal State Northridge Hall of Fame banquet on March 1 ... Currently, there are 99 former Cal State Northridge student-athletes, coaches and administrators in the Matador Hall of Fame ... Their bios are available on the Hall of Fame link (Inside Athletics) at www.gomatadors.cstv.com) ... The Hall of Fame link will soon include action pictures of many of the CSUN Hall of Famers ... The revival of the CSUN Hall of Fame ties in with the year long celebration on the 50th anniversary of Cal State Northridge.
