Matador Student-Athletes Embrace Northridge Community

June 9, 2008

Northridge, Calif. - Just because the school year has ended doesn't mean that Cal State Northridge student-athletes disappear for the summer. Matador student-athletes continue their commitment to the community.

Last Friday, members of the CSUN women's golf team, the Matador women's soccer team and the Big West co-champion men's basketball team participated in the Granada Elementary School's "Healthy Choice Fair", which promoted healthy eating habits and the importance of staying active.

This was an event planned in conjunction with the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) and supported by the Associated Students at Cal State Northridge. The Matador student-athletes interacted with the kids and discussed what is involved in sustaining a healthy lifestyle as well as joining the youngsters in various activities such as jump roping.

Willie Galick, who will be one of the top players on the Matador squad next year, believes in giving back to the community, and has a great time helping young kids in the Northridge community.

"I feel like I have switched roles," said Galick. "I remember being in that position (a youngster) and having the local university and high school players come around to inspire me. That's who I looked up too. To switch roles and put myself in that position is a great feeling."
