Fennell, English Named April Athletes of the Month
Cal State Northridge softball pitcher Kia Fennell and men's volleyball libero Doug English were named Student-Athletes of the Month for April as named by the Student-Athlete Advisory Council on Wednesday.

Fennell had a record-setting month for the Matador softball team, tying a school-record by hitting four home runs and breaking a record by driving in 11 runs in a doubleheader on April 18 against UC Riverside. For the month of April, Fennell hit .387 (12-for-31) with four home runs, 17 RBI and nine runs scored and also helped out the Matadors with her pitching skills. The sophomore went 7-3 with four shutouts and 59 strikeouts in 57 innings pitched.

English helped the Matador men's volleyball squad to an 18-12 overall record and a berth in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament, falling to eventual NCAA runner-up BYU in four games on April 19. Also in April, English was honored on the All-MPSF first team and, along with Joe Nargi, became the first Northridge player to be named an All-American since 1997, receiving the honor from the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

Also announced at Wednesday's meeting were the cabinet for the Student-Athlete Advisory Council for the 2003-04 year. Men's volleyball's Nils Nielsen and men's soccer's Yossi Raz were named co-presidents, women's swimming's Tatiana Maristany was named vice president and women's water polo's Erin Moser was named secretary.

Also nominated for Athlete of the Month:

Beth Allen, women's golf: Allen earned individual medalist honors at the Big West Conference Championships, shooting a two-under par score in leading the Matadors to the Big West Championship.

Laura Sauao, women's field: Sauao continues to lead the Matadors in all field categories. In a recent tri-meet with Cal Poly and Fresno State, Sauao finished first in the hammer and javelin.

Kyle Jean, baseball: Jean continued his success as a freshman during the month of April, throwing back-to-back complete games against ranked teams Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State.

Pete Sisich, men's golf: Sisich shot a tournament-best round of 65 at the Big West Championships to finish in second place at the tournament. He was also named to the All-Big West team.

Hung Nguyen, men's track: Nguyen was named Big West Conference Athlete of the Week on April 16 after winning the 100 and 200 meter sprints and being named Male Athlete of the Meet at the Cal-Nevada Championships.
