Volleyball Vibes ...
From one winner to another ... Now that the men's basketball season is over, that doesn't mean The Matadome goes silent ... Check out the nationally-ranked Matador men's volleyball team that has zoomed from a #8 pre-season ranking to #2 in the nation ...The #2 national ranking is the Matadors' highest ever since the AVCA poll was introduced in 1986 ... CSUN has played seven of the nation's Top 10 teams, and have beaten #3 Long Beach State, #5 Pepperdine, #6 Stanford (twice), #8 and defending NCAA champion UC Irvine, #9 UCLA, and #10 USC (3 times) ... The 17-4 record is the best start in the 31-year history of Matador men's volleyball ... CSUN is 13-3 in the MPSF, and 7-0 at The Matadome ... Enthusiastic crowds are now starting to file into The Matadome ... In their last match against Pepperdine, nearly 1,100 fans watched Cal State Northridge beat the Waves, one of the largest volleyball crowds in recent years ... By the way, the NCAA Championships are slated for May 1-3 at UC Irvine's Bren Center

Student Success ...
Susie Mischenko and Kevin Guppy are more than outstanding soccer players and excellent students... They are outstanding contributors to the world outside of Cal State Northridge ... Mischenko and Guppy were honored last week by the Big West Conference for their academic and athletic success at Cal State Northridge ... In addition to being outstanding student-athletes, it is their contributions to society that is truly outstanding ... Mischenko, a senior midfielder who will graduate with a degree in Kinesiology, helped build water systems in villages in need of fresh water in Thailand in 2002 and 2004 ... In 2002, Mischenko helped build a church in Mexico ... During the past two years, Mischenko has taught soccer skills to elementary school children in addition to stressing the value of an education to young people ... Guppy, a junior, is one of the all-time great goalkeepers in Matador history, and holds a 3.63 gpa in Sociology (Criminal Justice) ... Guppy is actively involved in the community by speaking to many kids on the value of education, teaching Taiko drumming at a local elementary school, and has participated in the "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" at the Valley Trauma Center to raise awareness of violence against women ... Simply outstanding achievements by two Cal State Northridge student-athletes.
