Hoops Hysteria ...
Interest is running high among NBA scouts for the Cal State Northridge vs Rider University ESPN BracketBuster men's basketball game on Feb. 23 (6:00 p.m., ESPNU)at The Matadome ... Admittedly, the scouts have an interest in Rider 6-foot-10 senior forward Jason Thompson, a top NBA prospect who is averaging 20 points, nearly three blocks per game, and is among the nation's leading rebounders at nearly 12 per game ... Nine NBA teams (Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers, Dallas Mavericks, Detroit Pistons, Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies, New Jersey Nets, Phoenix Suns and the San Antonio Spurs) have requested credentials to the game ... Thompson is a one of 30 candidates for the prestigious John Wooden Award, and his name is among a distinguished list including Tyler Hansbrough of North Carolina, Kevin Love of UCLA, and O.J. Mayo of USC.

Track Time ...
Veteran head track & field Don Strametz is always looking for creative ways to fund raise and extend the friendly hand of the Cal State Northridge campus into the community ... Strametz, who is the senior member of the Matador coaching staff, not only coaches the championship Matador men's and women's track & field teams, but is also highly successful in raising money to keep his nationally-ranked program at a high level ... One such successful endeavor has been the All-Comers Meets at Matador Track from January through early March ... On nearly every Saturday morning (starting around 8:30 a.m. and running through the mid-afternoon), Strametz schedules a series of running and field events for children, collegiate and post-collegiate athletes, Olympians, the community and even for senior citizens who still compete at the Masters level ... For only a $5 admission fee, any one can compete in as many events that are conducted during the day ... On some days with ideal weather conditions, nearly 650 people compete which means dollars that are placed into the track & field budget ... Kids as young as five years of age can spend a day competing on the track in their age events while other events will include top Olympic competitors ... Last year, several athletes who were around 75-years-old competed for the world record in the pole vault in their age-group ... Three weeks ago, a woman set the American record in her age group (50-years plus) in the javelin at Matador Track ... These All-Comers meet have been in existence at Cal State Northridge for nearly 42 years, and in addition to money raised for Cal State Northridge track & field, it's a great opportunity for the community to participate in track & field, and bond with the University. Go Matadors!!!
