The Week Ahead ...
A team of winners, a team flirting with destiny ... Bob Vazquez, Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations, offers his weekly insights on the accomplishments of the teams, coaches, and student-athletes who compete for Cal State Northridge ... The weekly report includes upcoming key games, and a report on what other activities are happening in the Matador Athletic Department ... For more information on Matador Athletics, go to www.gomatadors.com
Basketball Bio ...
There is something special going on at The Matadome ... The cheering you hear is the sound of a near capacity crowd cheering on the Matador men's basketball team as it enjoys what is turning out to be a memorable season ... The Matadors are nationally-ranked in the CollegeInsiders.com mid-major poll, and on the weekly ESPN Bracketology, CSUN is one of the 64 teams selected to the NCAA Tournament ... Of course, there is a long way to go before the end of the regular season, but for now, the stats look good, a 12-3 overall record and a first place showing in the Big West with a 4-0 record, the best conference mark in 30 years ... What has been the secret? ... Next week, head coach Bobby Braswell reveals how he has revamped a team that endured a losing season last year into a team blessed with talent, depth, a strong work ethic and excellent team chemistry ... The team has also handled adversity ... Injuries have sidelined three players for the year, and now there is a concern that senior standout Calvin Chitwood may be out of action for awhile ... Chitwood suffered what has been initially been desrcibed as a high ankle sprain during the second half of last Saturday's win vs Pacific ... Chitwood, who leads the league in blocked shots, and is one of the team's top scorers and rebounders, has played a vital role in the team's success this year.
Champion Cheerleaders ...
One of the hardest working groups on the CSUN campus are the 20 member Matador cheerleading team, who regularly instill school spirit at many of the athletic events at The Matadome ... The CSUN cheerleaders are also an award-winning group who last year for the first time competed at the National Championships in Las Vegas ... Their efforts paid off with a fifth place award in the Small Co-Ed division ... This year, the CSUN cheerleaders would like to place even higher at the 2008 United Spirit Nationals next month in Las Vegas ... The CSUN cheerleaders have been preparing and training diligently for this prestigious competition, and they need your help ... The cheerleading team is fundraising to compete at the Nationals, and on Sunday, January 20, 2008, there will be Youth Cheerleading Clinic offered for boys and girls, ages 5-13 ... The clinic will be held from Noon to 4:00 p.m. at the Activities Center at Cal State Northridge ... Youth cheerleaders will be seperated into different age groups, and the CSUN cheerleading squad will be instructing all materials in cheerleading ... Registration is $35/per student (groups of five or more on one payment will receive a $25/per student rate) ... Tuition includes a t-shirt, prizes, snacks and fun!!! ... More importantly this will be an exciting day with the CSUN Cheerleaders ...Please help to make their dreams of a National Title a reality.
