Matador Gymnasium, nicknamed The Matadome, is the home of all men's and women's basketball and men's and women's volleyball contests. The 42-year-old facility has undergone major reconstruction in recent years, receiving a new floor in 1996, a state-of-the-art scoreboard above center court in 1997, chair-backed bleachers in 1998 and a redesigned court in 2001. The refurbished 1,600-seat gym is located at the corner of Zelzah Avenue and Plummer Street on the Cal State Northridge campus. The overall attendance record for a sporting event in the facility is 3,106, achieved in standing-room-only fashion Nov. 2, 1990, when the United States defeated Japan in an international exhibition men's volleyball match. The Matadome is complete with men's and women's locker rooms as well as a training room and equipment storage space. It is adjacent to the Matadors' 25-yard competition swimming and diving pool, a fitness center and six racquetball courts. The facility also houses classrooms and offices for the university's Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education.
